You're here if you want to ski on the Aussie winter slopes, but don't know how to drive there.

Driving in snow is very different from driving in dry, or even icy conditions. It is slippery. It is bright and easy on the eyes. It requires planning that is a little different from what you would need for a holiday like camping.

It's not scary to learn how to drive in snow! This article will show you how.

How to drive in snow

You want to join the Drivers' Snow Club? These driving tips will help you complete your initiation. This guide covers all you need to make your mountain journey a success.

Patience is the first rule when driving in the snow club. To maintain control over your ride on snow club roads, you will need to be patient and not go, go go, go as we are used to.

Do you remember when your parents said to you that you should look ahead of you as you drove? This principle is also applicable here. You can see ahead and anticipate how you will respond to changing conditions.

Pay attention to road signs. Enough said.

Do not be a douche! If you are at a resort, please listen to those in charge. Only park where it is allowed. They are there to protect you and your family.

Accelerate slowly. It'll help you gain traction quicker.

Use steady pressure to brake. You might experience skidding or slippage if you apply too much brake pressure.

Pay attention to your car. If you see your dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree, it's likely that you have lost traction.

When driving down the mountain, use your lowest gear. Drive an auto? It can be thrown into 1.

When possible, use snow chains

Facts for the day

Grip can be measured using a scale called "coefficient of friction". The results are usually between 0 and 1. Your car's grip in snow is around.15 This is compared to driving on wet glass, which offers around.10.

Do not brake when you turn. To reduce the chance of losing control at the bend, accelerate and/or brake gently before you reach your turn.

Nighttime is the best time to use your low beams. High beams can't penetrate heavy fog or mist.

If it is too dangerous to drive, stop and use your hazard lights. Keep the engine running so you are able to drive again when conditions improve.

Are you planning to park overnight? To ensure that your wipers don't freeze to the windshield, all snow resorts recommend that you remove the wipers from your windscreen.

Do you rock a dual-fuel (LPG/petrol) engine? It is a good idea to switch from gasoline before you go to the snow, and then run on petrol while in the ski area. Why? Why?

Salt: Take a bag. You can quickly remove ice from your windscreen by adding salt to cold water.

You should inspect your lights: brake lights, headlights, indicators, and fog lights, if they are fitted. You should have them checked if they aren't working properly or are running a bit dull.

Drive a diesel vehicle? Regular diesel can freeze below 0 OC, so make sure to fill your tank with "Alpine Diesel" prior to hitting the snow.

Your car's battery should be between 3 and 5 years old. If your car battery is over 3 - 5 years old, i.e. Cold temperatures can put additional strain on your battery so make sure you have one ready for any journey.

Many people recommend adding antifreeze to your coolant. But, the truth is that most coolants already contain antifreeze - even the cheaper ones. Talk to your mechanic if you are unsure.

Make sure to pack your sunglasses, the snow glare can be very bright.

You can practice fitting snow chains. Although they are usually very easy to fit, it is better to practice fitting them in warmer, dry conditions than on top of a mountain.

The playing guidelines

Snow chains must be used on your vehicle according to Australian law. Only difference is that drivers in NSW don't have to use snow chains to drive a 4WD. Are you a new driver? To give yourself more control, it is highly recommended to use snow chains. Do not take it personally, I would use them and have been driving for more than a decade.

How do I rent a car? You are not allowed to drive your car in the snow, but you should check with your hirer.

Get advice before you go

You should make sure that there is no snow on your car. You could face a fine from police but it's also a safety hazard for you and others (brake and it might slide onto your windshield).

The last word

Driving in the snow can be a great experience. We recommend it! You need to plan ahead to ensure your safety and make sure you have all the necessary accessories. Remember to follow the signs and officials at the slopes. They are there to assist you.
