How to Avoid a Window Tint Ticket
A very simple understanding of what the law actual says in your state will go a long way with law enforcement.
First of all I am writing this article based on another article I read over at a state specific Window Tint Blog. They make a great point that most people simply don't understand what the law actually is in their respective states. So we thought it would be a good idea to lay it all out here for you!
How can the police actually tell how dark your windows are?
This is a common question when it comes to this subject and rightfully so. For a while after these laws started going into effect, most law enforcement officers did not carry the proper tools to gauge actual window visibility or lack thereof. That being said, those tools are now a part of nearly every city cop's arsenal. Matter of fact, you can buy your own for around $100 now. They are called "Window Tint Meters," and as the name states, they can measure the level of visibility on both sides of a window. So the hope that a police officer might not have a window tint meter on hand nowadays when you get stopped, has pretty much gone out the window.
What is the law in my state?
So lets get into the meat of this article. How do you know what the law is in your state? You could call your local window tinting auto body shop, or you could simply visit this blog post where they describe in full detail how to check what the current law is in your state. This article was written specifically for the state of Tennessee, but the search menu allows you to check every state! So check it out here: Tint Law Article.
How much are the tickets if you want to risk it?
Well the answer to this question of course varies by state. In some states, they will simply issue you a warning with a court date and no fees, where they will then double check that the tint has been removed since the issue of the warning. In other states they will give you a full on ticket at the first offense of breaking the window tinting law. So in general, tickets can range from $25 all the way up to $500+ in extreme cases, especially for repeat offenses. Generally speaking, a window tint job where they put legal tint on your car is cheaper than getting a violation, and not to mention a lot less confrontational and time consuming.
So in conclusion, you can either roll down the street in your blacked our big rig truck and pay the tickets when they come, or you can ensure that your vehicle meets your state's legal requirements. Good luck, and we hope this article will help you understand your states law a little better!
