Australia has laws to ensure that drivers have the appropriate licences for the automobiles they run to safeguard the safety of the roads and drivers. For instance, operating trucks, buses, and other heavy vehicles call for a valid driver's licence. Likewise, you need to obtain an hr licence to operate a vehicle that is considered a Heavy Rigid Vehicle.

Upgrading from a regular automobile to a Heavy Rigid licence is the biggest improvement a professional driver can make. Driving a heavy rigid vehicle is different from driving a vehicle of any other kind. Your road position, turning lines, braking, and navigation are all impacted by the size of the vehicle. Transport training is essential for a driver due to these reasons.

Heavy Rigid (HR class) heavy vehicle licence

If you possess a heavy rigid licence, you are authorised to operate heavy automobiles with three or more axles and a gross vehicle mass greater than 8,000 kg. You also have a permit to tow a trailer with a maximum GVM of 9,000 kg.

If you want to get an HR licence, you must no longer hold a provisional licence. To get an HR licence, you should have held a Car (C class) licence with six months of experience, a Light Rigid heavy vehicle licence, or a Medium Rigid heavy vehicle licence.

It would be best if you were accompanied by an HR driving trainer with an HR licence, an instructor in a driving course with a Truck Licence Brisbane, or someone who has held an HR licence for four years.

Heavy Rigid Licence using RTO

You must meet the eligibility criterion if you undertake PDA with an RTO. You need to verify your identity by the RTO, pass your commercial vehicle eyesight test of the RTO, sign camera acknowledgement, and complete the relevant training module. You also need to declare commercial medical eligibility and get your signature verified by the RTO.

HR licence through Driver and Vehicle Services Centre

You can also apply to sit a PDA at any DVS Centre, except for the MC vehicle class.

You must present your E114 form's photocopy, POI department requirements, and DVS centre fees before getting a permit to drive HR vehicles. You must display 'L' plates and comply with other rules if you are a learner driver.

Submitting applications for HR licence

The next steps are to complete an application by submitting the DLA1 form and providing proof of identification.

The candidate should submit the applications in person to apply for an hr licence Brisbane. The candidate should provide a completed DL1 vehicle licence application form, proof of identity documents, and the required fees. These applications cannot be submitted by post.

Eyesight test and medical eligibility

After these steps, the candidate should undergo an eyesight test and declare commercial vehicle medical eligibility for the HR class. The RTO will conduct the tests if you choose to get trained through them. The Driver and Vehicle Services Centre or DoT office will also complete the eyesight test when you apply.

Candidates can declare any long-term mental or physical condition.

Heavy vehicle theory test

If you currently have an MR class licence or are trained by RTO, you don't have to take the heavy vehicle theory test. But you must take the Heavy Vehicle theory test if you only have a C or LR class licence.

The Heavy Vehicle theory test consists of 10 questions. To pass this test, the applicant should give eight correct answers.

If you want to upgrade to a heavy rigid licence Brisbane, you should undertake a Practical Driving Assessment.

If you pass your PDA assessment conducted by DoT, you can get your licence card when renewing your current licence. You can request a replacement licence to reflect your vehicle class in your driver's licence.

Audio-visual, GPS and recording of the PDA

Approved RTOs will perform in-cabin audio and video recordings. RTOs use surveillance equipment and cameras with GPS to record PDA sessions. When the applicant attends a PDA conducted by an RTO, they must sign the camera acknowledgement on the Heavy vehicle in the E114 form.

Final thoughts

The vehicle competency requirements underpin the driver training and licencing system for hr licence Australia, which aims to create safer drivers.

Assessors use the heavy vehicle standards to determine a learner driver's proficiency with heavy vehicle operation. It should be used as a guide by driving instructors rather than a set of abilities for beginning drivers.
