The automotive industry is undergoing one of its biggest transformations in history, and digital technology is at the heart of it. Modern vehicles are no longer just machines built for transportation; they have evolved into smart, connected devices that can receive updates, monitor their own performance, and deliver a better driving experience through software.

Speaking at the 2026 World Internet Conference Digital Silk Road Development Forum in Xi'an, Tesla representative Tao Keyu highlighted how digital technologies are reshaping the automotive sector. From over-the-air (OTA) software updates to intelligent charging infrastructure and digital after-sales services, the industry is becoming more connected and efficient than ever before.

Cars That Improve Over Time

One of the biggest changes brought by digital technology is the ability for vehicles to improve long after they leave the factory.

Traditionally, fixing bugs or adding new features often required a visit to the dealership. Today, many new energy vehicles (NEVs), particularly electric vehicles (EVs), use over-the-air (OTA) software updates to install improvements remotely.

Just like smartphones receive regular software updates, modern vehicles can download new features, security patches, and performance improvements through an internet connection. Owners no longer need to schedule appointments for every software-related issue, making maintenance much more convenient.

OTA technology also allows manufacturers to continuously enhance vehicle performance, improve battery management, optimize driving systems, and even introduce entirely new features throughout the vehicle's lifespan.

Smarter Charging Infrastructure

Digital technology is not only changing vehicles; it is also transforming the charging networks that support them.

Modern EV charging stations are becoming increasingly intelligent through digital monitoring systems and OTA software upgrades. Operators can remotely monitor equipment, identify faults, improve charging efficiency, and install software updates without sending technicians to every location.

For drivers, this translates into more reliable charging experiences, shorter downtime, and better overall service.

As electric vehicle adoption continues to grow worldwide, smart charging infrastructure will become increasingly important in ensuring networks remain efficient and capable of handling higher demand.

Improving After-Sales Services

Vehicle ownership is also becoming more digital.

After-sales services are shifting from traditional maintenance schedules to predictive and connected support systems. Modern vehicles continuously generate diagnostic information that helps manufacturers and service centres detect potential issues before they become serious problems.

Instead of waiting for a warning light to appear, service teams may receive alerts about developing faults, allowing maintenance to be scheduled proactively.

Digital platforms also make it easier for customers to book service appointments, access vehicle records, receive software updates, and communicate with dealerships through mobile applications.

This creates a smoother ownership experience while helping reduce unexpected breakdowns.

Software Is Becoming as Important as Hardware

The automotive industry has traditionally focused on engines, transmissions, and mechanical engineering. Today, software has become equally important.

Manufacturers now compete not only on horsepower, design, and fuel efficiency but also on digital capabilities such as infotainment systems, driver assistance technologies, connectivity, navigation, and autonomous driving features.

Many buyers now expect their vehicles to integrate seamlessly with smartphones, offer voice assistants, support cloud-based services, and receive regular feature updates throughout ownership.

This shift is changing how automakers develop vehicles, with software engineering playing a much larger role than ever before.

The Rise of Connected Vehicles

Digital technology has also enabled vehicles to stay connected to the internet, creating opportunities for real-time communication between drivers, manufacturers, and service providers.

Connected vehicles can provide live traffic updates, weather information, remote diagnostics, navigation improvements, and emergency assistance. Some systems even allow owners to remotely lock or unlock their cars, monitor battery levels, pre-condition cabin temperatures, or locate their vehicles using smartphone apps.

These connected features improve convenience while also enhancing safety and efficiency.

Supporting the Growth of Electric Vehicles

The rapid growth of electric vehicles would not be possible without digital technology.

Battery management systems constantly monitor battery health, charging performance, and energy consumption to maximise efficiency and extend battery life. Advanced software also helps drivers estimate driving range more accurately and identifies the best charging routes during long-distance travel.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning further improve energy management by learning driving habits and optimising battery usage based on road conditions and driver behaviour.

These technologies help reduce range anxiety and make electric vehicles more practical for everyday use.

Digital Innovation Will Continue to Shape the Industry

During the forum, Tao Keyu emphasised that digital technology has already fundamentally transformed the automotive industry. As vehicles become more connected, software-driven, and intelligent, digital innovation will continue to shape how cars are designed, built, maintained, and operated.

Future developments are expected to include even more advanced autonomous driving systems, smarter charging infrastructure, stronger vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and deeper integration with artificial intelligence.

The automotive industry is rapidly evolving beyond transportation alone, becoming part of a broader digital ecosystem that connects vehicles, infrastructure, and users in ways that were once unimaginable.

Digital technology is changing every aspect of the automotive industry, from how vehicles are manufactured to how they are driven and maintained. Features such as over-the-air updates, intelligent charging stations, connected services, and predictive maintenance are making modern vehicles smarter, safer, and more convenient to own.

As software continues to play a larger role alongside traditional engineering, the future of mobility will increasingly depend on digital innovation. For drivers, this means cars that continue improving throughout their lifespan, while manufacturers gain new opportunities to deliver better services and enhanced customer experiences.

The shift toward digital automotive technology is still in its early stages, but it is already redefining what people expect from the cars they drive every day.
