The Artwork and the Historic Moment

Official Title: 1993 Daytona 24 Hr

Artist: Hector Cademartori

Event: 1993 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

Location: Daytona International Speedway, Florida

Date: January 30–31, 1993

This powerful work by motorsport artist Hector Cademartori captures one of the most significant turning points in the history of American endurance racing. Set in the soft, golden light of early dawn at the International Horseshoe, the famous sweeping hairpin that tests both driver skill and car reliability, the painting freezes a moment when the race had shifted from a battle of speed into a test of stamina, strategy, and mechanical endurance.

It was the year that Dan Gurney’s All-American Racers (AAR) and Toyota Motorsports made history together, securing their first-ever overall victory at the Daytona 24 Hours. For Gurney’s team, it was the culmination of years of development, innovation, and relentless effort; for Toyota, it marked its first major triumph in international endurance competition, proving that its engineering could stand alongside the finest marques in the world.

The Scene Unfolds

In the foreground, leading the pack, is the No. 98 Eagle MkIII GTP, the masterpiece designed and built by All American Racers. Driven by the experienced trio of Rocky Moran, P.J. Jones, and Mark Dismore, this car was more than just a race machine; it was a revolution. Powered by a compact yet ferocious turbocharged 2.1‑litre Toyota four‑cylinder engine, it combined lightweight construction, advanced aerodynamics, and exceptional fuel efficiency, allowing it to stretch its range between pit stops and maintain consistent lap times even as the hours wore on. In this race, it would complete 698 laps, covering a total distance of nearly 2,500 miles (4,000 km), a remarkable feat that would later see the Eagle MkIII hailed as one of the greatest GTP‑class cars ever built, with a legendary record of 21 wins from only 27 starts throughout its career.

Close behind the leading Eagle, the painting captures the rich diversity of the 1993 field:

  • A sleek Jaguar XJR‑12, the dominant force of the previous era, is still formidable and pushing hard to reclaim the lead;

  • The Nissan 300ZX, which went on to take a dominant victory in the GTO class, showcased the brand’s growing strength in production‑based racing;

  • The instantly recognizable Momo Porsche 962, a fan favorite and staple of endurance racing, represents the decades of success that have made Porsche synonymous with the 24‑hour race.

The lighting in the piece is carefully rendered to reflect the transition from night to day. Long shadows stretch across the track, the glow of headlights still cuts through the lingering mist, and the sky begins to brighten with the promise of sunrise. This was the critical “dawn hour,” a time when fatigue can set in, visibility shifts, and races are often won or lost.

A Personal Tribute

As Casey Annis recalls, this piece holds special meaning beyond its historical subject:

“I went to Daytona that year and witnessed firsthand the excitement of the race. It was the moment Dan Gurney’s All-American Racers and Toyota took their first overall win at the 24 Hours, an achievement that felt like a victory for everyone who believed in their hard work. I had the honor and privilege of collaborating on several projects with Dan and his team at AAR over the years, including designing the logo for his innovative Alligator motorcycle. This artwork is not just a painting; it is a tribute to a great team, a historic partnership, and the spirit of endurance racing itself.”

The 1993 Daytona 24 Hours victory would become the foundation for future success, setting the stage for more wins at Sebring and the rise of the Eagle‑Toyota combination as the benchmark in GTP racing. Cademartori’s work preserves that moment in time, capturing not only the cars and the track but also the atmosphere, tension, and glory of one of the most memorable races in the history of the event.
