Ford Ranger Line-Up Set for Major Update in Malaysia, Flagship 3.0L Turbo Diesel V6 Platinum Variant Expected, Alongside Refreshed Mid-Range and Entry-Level Models
3.0L Turbo Diesel V6 Platinum Variant

Ford Malaysia has officially dropped the first teaser for what is shaping up to be one of the most significant updates to the popular Ford Ranger pickup range in recent years. Shared via the company’s official Facebook page, the preview image shows the silhouettes of three distinct double‑cab models, strongly indicating that the upcoming refresh will introduce changes across every tier of the local line‑up from the workhorse base variant all the way up to a new premium flagship specification.
While the image itself is intentionally darkened to keep full details under wraps, the distinct shapes, proportions, and visible features of each vehicle offer plenty of clues about what buyers can look forward to when the updated range arrives later this month.
New Flagship: The Arrival of the 3.0L V6‑Powered Ranger Platinum
The most prominent vehicle in the teaser stands out thanks to its roof rails and slightly higher profile, marking it as the new top‑of‑the‑range offering. Currently, the most powerful and well‑equipped model available in Malaysia is the Ranger WildTrak 3.0‑litre V6 Turbo Diesel, which was introduced in 2025 and received a warm reception.
Following Ford’s established launch strategy, where the Platinum trim usually debuts roughly one year after the equivalent WildTrak variant, it is widely expected that this new model will be the Ranger Platinum 3.0L Turbo Diesel V6. This aligns perfectly with what Ford has done with the Everest SUV range, where the 3.0L V6 engine was first offered in the WildTrak before being followed by the more luxurious Platinum grade.
If confirmed, the Ranger Platinum will bring the same smooth, torque‑rich V6 performance already proven for its towing capability and highway refinement, paired with an upgraded interior, premium materials, and a more comprehensive suite of comfort and technology features. It would position the Ranger as a more direct rival to the highest‑spec versions of the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D‑Max, and Mitsubishi Triton.
Mid‑Range Overhaul: End of the Bi‑Turbo, Shift to Single‑Turbo Power
The second vehicle shown in the teaser appears to be a mid‑range model, representing what could be the biggest technical change in the update. According to industry reports from Car Expert, Ford has officially discontinued the 2.0‑litre Bi‑Turbo diesel engine globally from the 2026 model year, marking the end of the powertrain that has served many Ranger variants in Malaysia for years.
Taking its place is the simpler, more efficient 2.0‑litre Single‑Turbo diesel engine, which is already being rolled out in markets such as Australia. This shift is expected to apply to popular local grades, including the XLT and XLT Plus, and could also introduce a special edition like the Ranger Black Edition, a dark‑themed variant already offered in Australia that uses the same single‑turbo setup.
While peak power will be slightly lower than the outgoing Bi‑Turbo unit, the change promises better fuel economy, lower maintenance costs, and improved reliability for everyday use. It also helps streamline Ford’s global engine portfolio, making parts and service more consistent across regions.
Entry‑Level Workhorse: Updated XL Variant
Completing the trio is the third and most modest‑looking silhouette, which is almost certainly the base‑grade Ranger XL. This model has long been the backbone of the Ranger family, favoured by businesses, plantations, and fleet operators for its durability and value.
In Australia, the updated 2026.5 model‑year XL now also comes equipped with the 2.0‑litre Single‑Turbo diesel as standard, though it retains the option to upgrade to the 3.0L V6 for those needing extra power. For Malaysia, the single‑turbo engine is the most logical choice, keeping the XL affordable while still offering enough performance for heavy‑duty work.
Of course, the high‑performance Ranger Raptor will remain a separate offering in the line‑up, continuing with its dedicated twin‑turbo petrol V6 powertrain and off‑road‑focused chassis setup.
Launch Timeline and Details
Ford Malaysia has confirmed that full specifications, pricing, and complete images of the updated Ranger range will be officially revealed later this month. Immediately following the launch, the new models will be put on public display at 1 Utama Shopping Centre starting July 23, giving customers and enthusiasts the first chance to see the changes up close.
As the pickup segment in Malaysia continues to grow in popularity, these updates are expected to keep the Ranger competitive, offering something for every type of buyer, whether they need a reliable work truck, a comfortable family vehicle, or a premium flagship model.
