Fiat Brings Topolino Mini EV to the U.S. Market With a Starting Price of $13,995
Tiny, lightweight electric vehicle targets short-distance travel, with plans to expand road access later this year
MILAN — In a move that blends automotive heritage with modern sustainability, Fiat has officially launched sales of its tiny, fully electric Topolino model in the United States, bringing a distinctive and affordable new option to the growing low‑speed vehicle segment. With a starting price set at just $13,995, the two‑seat microcar is designed specifically for short‑distance travel, offering an accessible entry point into electric mobility while expanding the brand’s lineup beyond its existing city‑car offerings.
First introduced across Europe back in 2023, the Topolino revives one of the most famous names in Fiat’s history. The model name dates back to the 1930s, when the original Fiat 500 “Topolino,” which translates to “little mouse” in Italian, earned its place as an icon of affordable, practical transportation. The nickname became widely associated with Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse, giving the vehicle a charming and recognizable identity that lasted for decades. Now, more than 90 years later, the name returns, reimagined for the 21st century as a zero‑emission vehicle built to meet the changing needs of modern communities.
Measuring only 8 feet in length and tipping the scales at just over 1,000 pounds, the new Topolino is among the smallest vehicles available on American roads. Its compact footprint makes it exceptionally easy to maneuver and park, even in the tightest spaces, while its lightweight design helps maximize energy efficiency. In its initial launch configuration, the vehicle is limited to a top speed of 19 miles per hour, meaning it is intended primarily for use within private property, gated residential communities, holiday resorts, golf courses, university campuses, industrial facilities, and other areas where regular traffic does not operate.
Power comes from a modest but efficient 5.4‑kilowatt‑hour lithium‑ion battery pack, which provides a maximum driving range of approximately 46 miles (74 kilometers) on a single charge. For most users, this is more than enough to cover daily trips within a limited area. Recharging is also simple and convenient: using a standard 120‑volt household outlet, the battery can be fully replenished in roughly five hours, eliminating the need for expensive home charging stations or visits to public fast‑charging networks.
However, Fiat has confirmed that the vehicle’s capabilities will be expanded later in the year. Beginning in late summer 2026, the company will make available an official upgrade kit that transforms the Topolino into a federally classified Low‑Speed Vehicle (LSV). Once installed, the modification will raise the maximum speed to 25 miles per hour, allowing the car to legally operate on public roads posted with speed limits of 35 mph or less. This adjustment significantly broadens the vehicle’s potential use cases, making it suitable for short trips around town, neighborhood errands, and commuting within small cities and suburban areas.
“Fiat continues to stand apart by embracing its legacy in small cars,” said Olivier Francois, Chief Executive Officer of the Fiat brand. “We believe mobility does not have to be one‑size‑fits‑all. There is a clear and growing demand for simple, accessible, and sustainable transportation solutions that match specific lifestyles and travel patterns. The Topolino answers that call perfectly, offering a fun, practical, and affordable choice for those who do not require a large vehicle for every journey they make.”
The introduction of the Topolino marks an important expansion for Fiat’s North American strategy. Until now, the brand’s only electric offering in the region was the Fiat 500e, a larger city car with greater range and performance but also a higher price tag. By adding the Topolino to the lineup, Fiat is able to target a completely different set of customers, including those looking for a secondary vehicle, residents of planned communities, retirees seeking easy‑to‑drive transport, and businesses needing clean, quiet vehicles for on‑site operations.
Industry analysts note that the Topolino also fills a gap in the U.S. market, where ultra‑compact electric vehicles have remained relatively scarce compared to Europe and Asia. With its low purchase price and minimal operating costs, the model could help introduce more consumers to electric driving without the higher investment required for full‑size EVs. Running costs are expected to be a fraction of those of gasoline‑powered vehicles, with electricity charges amounting to just a few cents per mile, and fewer moving parts meaning lower maintenance expenses over time.
While the Topolino is clearly not designed to replace a family car or serve long‑distance highway travel, it represents a practical solution for the way many people actually use their vehicles. As cities continue to look for ways to reduce congestion, lower emissions, and improve air quality, small, low‑speed electric vehicles are increasingly seen as part of the solution.
Built under the umbrella of global automotive group Stellantis, the Topolino joins a growing portfolio of electrified models across the company’s brands. Its arrival in the U.S. also follows strong demand in European markets, where it has become popular in cities and coastal regions. As Fiat opens orders and begins deliveries, the Topolino is set to offer a fresh, heritage‑inspired choice for anyone seeking simple, affordable, and sustainable mobility.
