Pickup trucks have long been a staple of the American automotive market. But now that we are seeing a wave of electric trucks that hit the market, buyers will have a new selection of pickup trucks. While gasoline-powered engines have always been the norm, that may be changing soon—especially now that modernity makes driving more enjoyable and efficient.

Electric pickup trucks are starting to make their way onto the market, and they could soon dominate the truck segment. You will see the advent of electric pickup trucks in the not-so-distant future.

Kelly Blue Book published a list of EV pickup trucks we will encounter on American roads sooner than later. These trucks will hit the market next year and beyond:

Volkswagen Scout EV truck

Volkswagen purchased Navistar in 2020, which was the successor company to International. The automaker has the right to the name "Scout." Many people were enthused when they resurrected the nameplate. Scout is a moniker initially made by International Harvester. The vehicle was a precursor of sophisticated SUVs and became one of Jeep's competitors. t was introduced in 1961 and reached the second generation through 1980, wherein it was called Scout II.

VW's electric truck has been scheduled to release 2026 model year. The German automaker released concept art showing one for a pickup truck design and another for an SUV. Both gave hints of retro and futuristic looks that carry a potent electric powertrain.

Chevrolet Silverado EV

GMC already released its electrified Hummer in 2022. But if you're not satisfied with the Hummer EV's bold design yet impressed by the powertrain, the Chevy Silverado might be the right truck.

The 2024 Silverado EV will share the same electric powertrain and rides on the same dedicated EV architecture as the GMC Hummer. It also offers the same capability but resembles a classic pickup truck look. It has a truck bed, giving you more room for cargo and storage. The electric truck will get a large battery pack that delivers up to 664-hh and a range of 400 miles per charge. It has a fast-charging DC tech that can juice up the battery in just 10 minutes with 100 miles of range. The dual electric motors have a standard all-wheel drive. The Silverado EV can haul up to 1300 pounds of payload and has a towing capacity of 10,000 pounds.

Toyota All-Electric Tacoma

Toyota is stepping up the game with its all-electric Tacoma. The 2024 model will get a turbocharged I-4, hybridized V6 engine, and a new platform in a Tundra-inspired styling. The truck will have. Additionally, it has a more extensive package since the cab and bed are stubbier than the gas counterpart.

The Tacoma is Toyota's best-selling mid-size pickup truck, and it's been that way for over a decade. Aside from the hints of Tundra styling, it has a closed-off grille design, cool-looking truck wheels, and beefier tires. Moreover, it has an excellent approach angle and ground clearance beneficial for off-roading.

Ford Ranger EV

Ford is sharing the truck architecture of the Ranger with Volkswagen. The development costs are spread over the offerings of the two automakers as they confirmed the partnership for Amarok. The globally-used chassis of the Ranger has served as the basis for the Bronco and other Ford SUVs. Consequently, electrified vehicles could increase from a mid-sized EV development. Aside from the Ranger, we may see more electrified versions of the Ford lineup in the coming years.

Ford got many positive reviews and has seen robust demand since the electrified F-150 Lightning was released on the market. Since the compact truck segment is not really saturated yet, and currently has very little selection—the small electric pickup could make sense.

Ram EV

Ram is developing a dedicated STLA chassis for EVs since they are going big in its electrification efforts. Riding between the frame rails underneath the cab of the 2024 Ram 1500 EV is a powerful battery pack. It gives the truck a driving range as high as 500 miles on a charge. It will also get a 150 kWh DC fast charge capability.

Ram released a teaser for the proposed look of the truck. The frontage doesn't show a lot, but it seems they modified the front end of the traditional gas-powered truck to something more futuristic.

Tesla Cybertruck

Elon Musk unveiled a wildly futuristic electric pickup way back in 2019. Among other EVs that have been launched, the Cybertruck became one of the most highly anticipated. The design made it controversial as many people have different opinions about it. It can fit people inside, and even if the truck bed isn't visible, the rear cargo space has a built-in loading ramp that allows you to various loads, including ATVs or bikes.

The Cybertruck was supposed to be in production after its launch, but delays have pushed that release date to 2023. Tesla's CEO confirmed that the company aims to launch the long-awaited electric vehicle in mid-2023. It promises a range of 500 miles and a towing capacity of 14,000 pounds. Tesla gave the truck an estimated price of $39,900, but the figure seems a bit steep, especially in today's economy.

Startups

Automotive analysts predict EV demand will increase because all vehicle options are subjected to electrification, including smaller cars like sedans, coupes, convertibles, supercars, and crossovers. Larger vehicles like SUVs and America's favorite automobile—pickup trucks, are included in the transition from gas to electric.

Companies are creating more advanced infrastructure for alternative emissions, especially for consumers who want to switch from gasoline. These machines will eventually become primary modes of transportation. Startups have breakthroughs in the automotive market by using bigger batteries that get leaps in charging technology. Here are some of the startup companies that will also offer electric trucks:

Rivian R2

The first vehicle Rivian launched on the market is the R1T electric pickup truck. It is the first all-electric truck to win MotorTrend's "Truck of the Year for 2022" award, proving that a startup company can create a highly innovative and exciting vehicle.

The second truck that Rivian will create accelerates like a sports car. It has the capability and ground clearance of a true 4x4. Moreover, it can tow a trailer of up to 10,000 pounds. The R2 range will be dimensionally smaller than the R1T—but the reduced size means it will be more affordable.

Lordstown Endurance

Lordstown Motors tread a bumpy road, mainly when GM sold off its 7.5 million company shares. The startup needed money to finance its production, so it had no choice but to offload the Ohio plant to Foxconn for $230 million. Foxconn, a Taiwanese multinational electronics manufacturer, will build Lordstown trucks in the third quarter of 2022 under contract.

The engine setup of the Endurance reduces the number of parts and is said to improve the reliability compared to conventional designs. It is said to deliver 600 horsepower with its in-wheel hub electric motors, giving an estimated driving range of about 250 miles. The company anticipates producing 500 units by the end of 2022, but it seems they are losing money on each unit.

Alpha Motors Wolf

Alpha Motor Corporation, a startup from Irvine, California, launched a classic-looking truck that sports an electric engine. The vehicle's design taps into a demographic that enjoys off-roading but wants the old-school compact truck look of the 1980s.

The Wolf has a regular cab, Wolf Plus has a four-door setup, and the Superwolf is the most off-road-capable among the trims. The electric trucks offered by Alpha Motors are said to have batteries that can deliver a driving range of 250 to 300 miles. The four-wheel-drive dual-motor Superwolf can quickly hit 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. It can also tow a 6,724-pound trailer and comes with innovative cargo storage solutions great for outdoor adventure.

Atlis XT

Atlis Motor is another startup that joined the automotive industry. The company's XT truck claims to be the first heavy-duty EV pickup due to its adaptable chassis, supporting recreational and commercial vehicles, including trucks with dually wheels. Its minimum wheelbase is 144 inches (the same as a full-size crew cab pickup), but it can be adjusted to over 170 inches. The truck can handle 5,000 pounds of payload and tow 35,000 pounds.

The XT has a "load-response" air suspension, a 4-wheel independent suspension, and 4-wheel steering. The battery packs that the truck uses have over 250 kWh and can go at 500 miles of driving range, producing a total of 600 horsepower. The basic model will have 10 inches of wheel travel and a ground clearance of 12 inches. Customers who prefer the off-road-focused pickup has 15 inches of clearance and over 12 inches of travel.

Canoo Truck

Canoo is a small startup, but it promises to launch an electric truck with a radical cab-over style in 2023. The Canoo truck promises a range of over 200 miles. It looks a bit like a Japanese delivery truck since the company built it with the same underpinning as a fully enclosed van. Moreover, the vehicle's architecture can support as large as 80 kWh batteries. Customers can choose from rear or all-wheel drive.

Additionally, the Canoo truck has a 6-foot bed extending to eight feet. It also includes a step that slides out from the body, various storage drawers, and modular dividers. It’s great for camping or leisure because it has fold-down tables and a front trunk that allows you to put some items. However, it has a short wheelbase that is different from a standard pickup since the cab is located over the front wheels. The truck outputs 500 horsepower and a payload weight of 1,800 pounds.

Truck electrification

Pickup trucks have become one of the most popular vehicles on the market. However, automakers must comply with the zero-emission goal, so they will soon phase out their lineup with internal combustion engines. Gas and diesel trucks are known to be loud and brute, but the robust yet silent all-electric-powered trucks could soon dominate the truck segment. Expect to see more of them on the roads soon.

Electric trucks are the future as they offer massive torque with faster response. Although electric pickups will not be the same as their fuel-powered counterparts, they provide a new way to haul loads, drive around town, or explore the off-road trails.
