Eighth-Generation Lexus ES Debuts in Indonesia with Hybrid and All-Electric Variants

The new XZ20 flagship sedan arrives at GIIAS 2026 offering a choice between the efficient ES350h and the fully electric ES350e, signaling a major shift for the luxury brand as Malaysia prepares for its launch

The star of Lexus’ booth at the ongoing Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2026 is undoubtedly the all-new eighth-generation Lexus ES. Codenamed the XZ20, the latest iteration of Lexus’ best-selling executive sedan has arrived with a bold new design philosophy dubbed “Clean Tech × Elegance” and, for the first time, an all-electric powertrain option.

In Indonesia, the new ES is available in two distinct flavors: the hybrid ES350h Luxury, priced at Rp 1.299 billion (approximately RM295,222), and the fully electric ES350e Luxury, priced at Rp 1.480 billion (approximately RM336,354). This dual-powertrain strategy highlights Lexus’ commitment to providing diverse electrified options as it transitions toward a carbon-neutral future.

The Hybrid Choice: ES350h

The ES350h serves as the entry point into the new generation, utilizing Lexus’ renowned sixth-generation hybrid system. Under the hood lies the A25A-FXS 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, which produces 189 PS and 235 Nm of torque. This is paired with an electric motor delivering 162 PS and 272 Nm, resulting in a combined system output of 247 PS. Power is sent exclusively to the front wheels via an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (e-CVT).

While the Japanese domestic market offers an E-Four all-wheel-drive variant that adds a rear-mounted electric motor (56 PS/123 Nm), export markets like Indonesia and Malaysia will likely stick to the front-wheel-drive configuration, which remains the norm for this segment due to its efficiency and packaging benefits.

The Electric Pioneer: ES350e

Making its global debut alongside the hybrid is the ES350e, the first fully electric version of the ES. This model is built on a revised version of the TNGA-K platform and features a single-motor front-wheel-drive setup. The electric motor generates 224 PS (165 kW) and 289 Nm of instant torque, providing a smooth and silent driving experience characteristic of the ES lineage.

Energy is stored in a 74.7 kWh battery pack, which supports DC fast charging at up to 150 kW. In terms of range, Lexus quotes a 685 km figure based on China’s CLTC cycle. When translated to the more rigorous WLTP standard typically used in Southeast Asia, this should equate to a realistic range of approximately 560 km. For those seeking more performance, other markets also receive the dual-motor AWD ES500e, which boosts output to 343 PS but comes with a slightly reduced CLTC range of 610 km.

Growing in Stature

The eighth-generation ES has grown significantly in size, bringing it closer to the dimensions of the flagship LS sedan. The new model measures 5,140 mm in length and 1,920 mm in width, with a wheelbase stretched to 2,950 mm. For comparison, the current LS is 5,235 mm long with a 3,125 mm wheelbase. This increase in footprint translates to a more spacious cabin, enhanced ride comfort, and a more commanding road presence.

Visually, the new ES adopts a futuristic aesthetic with sharp lines, complex surfaces, and a distinctive spindle body design that integrates the grille area seamlessly into the bodywork. Whether this "Clean Tech" look resonates with buyers remains to be seen, but it certainly marks a departure from the conservative styling of previous generations.

What Does This Mean for Malaysia?

The launch in Indonesia is a strong indicator that the new ES is just around the corner for Malaysian customers. Lexus Malaysia has already updated its official website with a dedicated page for the all-new ES, accompanied by social media teasers earlier this month. The local site confirms that the ES will feature hybrid power, specifically citing the sixth-generation system, but remains silent on whether the all-electric ES350e will also be brought to our shores.

Pricing expectations suggest a premium over the current model. The outgoing ES starts at RM320,888, while estimates for the new generation place the starting price at approximately RM366,888. This increase reflects the advanced technology, larger dimensions, and improved materials found in the XZ20.

As Lexus continues to refine its electrified lineup, the introduction of the ES350e alongside the proven ES350h offers Malaysian buyers a compelling choice: stick with the reliability and ease of hybrid technology, or leap full electrification with a luxury sedan that promises zero emissions without compromising on comfort. With the official launch imminent, all eyes are now on Lexus Malaysia to confirm the final specifications and availability of both variants.
