BMW has officially announced the price of the i8, a plug-in hybrid sports car that overturns tradition, with only one model of the new car listed first.

The appearance: the shape of the wind/butterfly door design / 4 body colors to choose from

We don't need to say much about the appearance of the i8, the flowing body lines, and avant-garde design make this sports car look more like a product from the future, and with the butterfly door design, the overall visual effect is very windy.

It is worth mentioning that as a sub-brand of the BMW Group, the BMW i-series models have an additional circle of blue logos in addition to the original BMW Blue Sky White Cloud logo to represent the new energy products.

The BMW i8 models currently available on the market come in four body colors: Proton Blue, Crystal White, Ionic Silver, and Mystery Grey, which correspond to different interior styles and color schemes.

The BMW i8's dimensions are 4689/1942/1299 mm in length, width and height, with a wheelbase of 2800 mm. The car also has a 154-liter luggage compartment.

Interior / configuration: avant-garde styling / rich configuration, equipped with adaptive cruise control, head-up display, etc.

As for the interior, the BMW i8 is avant-garde in shape, and the standard model features an elegant interior with light colors, while most of the materials are made of olive leaf extract. As for the exclusive customization model, it can be chosen from Fashion, Sports, or Luxury interior, and the main difference between them is the color scheme.

In addition to the choice of interior style, the i8 can also be equipped with the PURE IMPULSE package, which features a handcrafted interior with some unique blue elements, and comes with a membership card and additional services.

In terms of configuration, depending on the trim level, the i8 will be equipped with automatic cruise control with braking, GPS navigation, flat-screen display system, connected driving service, call center remote assistance service, BMW Remote Assistant, and Harman Kardon audio system.

Power: with plug-in hybrid system (1.5T + electric motor), 0-100km/h acceleration of 4.4 seconds

Powering the BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid system, consisting of a 1.5T three-cylinder turbocharged engine and an electric motor. The power of the engine is directly output to the rear wheels, while the power of the electric motor is output to the front wheels. The engine has a maximum power of 231 hp and peak torque of 320 N-m; the electric motor has a maximum power of 129 hp and peak torque can reach 250 N-m.

What's special about the i8 is that two transmissions work with the engine and the electric motor respectively. The one that works with the engine is a 6-speed manual transmission, while the one that works with the electric motor is a two-speed automatic transmission.

In terms of performance, the BMW i8 accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 4.4 seconds in hybrid mode and can reach a top speed of 250km/h. In pure electric mode, it has a range of 37km and can reach a maximum speed of 120km/h. In addition, the BMW i8 has four driving modes: comfort, sport, economy, and e Drive (pure electric).

The BMW i8 has a high-voltage battery with a total capacity of 7.1 kWh and a usable power of 5.2 kWh. To fully charge this battery, it takes 2 hours to use the special charging box (16A), and about 2.5 hours to fully charge 80% if using a household power supply (12A).

New car history

The i8 was first unveiled in July 2011, when the avant-garde concept sports car caught everyone's attention, but perhaps at the time, many people did not expect the car to eventually go into mass production. After two years of preparation, BMW officially unveiled the production version of the i8 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2013. The first meeting between this car (production version) and domestic consumers was at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2014, and today we welcome the official launch of this car in China.

Competitors / Conclusion

The BMW i8 has no direct competitors in the current market. With its new energy concept, the i8 has "drawn the line" with many large-displacement traditional supercars, and it can be said that the i8 has come to the front of the new energy sports car segment of luxury brands.

Conclusion.

After all, the i8 listed today is relatively niche and can only belong to a small number of people, but from the i8, we see that this car integrates the most advanced technology in the development of BMW so far, and can be said to be a symbol and milestone.

In addition to the construction of charging piles, which we all know, BMW has also expanded its Moses Lake plant in the United States for the launch of more new energy vehicles and the production of its carbon fiber components. This step-by-step layout puts BMW ahead of many competitors.
