BMW M is entering a new era.

BMW Chairman Oliver Zipse confirmed the timing during the company's 2026 Annual General Meeting, while BMW M has separately confirmed that its next generation of high-performance cars will use Neue Klasse technology.

BMW has not yet officially confirmed that this first electric M model will be called the M3. There Is Also a Practical Advantage to Owning a Current M3

There is another factor that is easy to overlook when discussing future BMW values: parts availability.

The G80 and G81 are already established production cars, which means BMW specialists, independent garages and breakers have had time to become familiar with the platform.

As more vehicles reach higher mileages and more accident-damaged cars enter the used parts market, the availability of second-hand components should continue to develop.

This can make ownership easier for drivers who need replacement body panels, wheels, suspension components, interior parts, electronic components or other BMW parts.

A brand new performance model will naturally have a much smaller used parts market at the beginning of its life. That is not necessarily a problem, but it can mean that owners initially rely more heavily on manufacturer and specialist networks.

For a long-term owner, the established ecosystem around the current M3 is therefore worth considering.

Should You Buy a G80 or G81 M3 Before the Electric Era?

If you are considering an M3 purely as an investment, caution is important.

No guarantee used M3 prices will rise simply because BMW introduces an electric successor. Performance cars still depreciate, and future demand is impossible to predict with certainty.

However, if you already want an M3 and prefer the experience offered by a petrol straight-six, the current generation has a strong argument in its favour.
