Betamek Bhd (KL: BETA) started its new financial year on a strong note, driven by higher automotive production volumes, growing export sales and a broader customer base.

In a Bursa filing on Thursday, the automotive electronics manufacturer said net profit rose 53.2% to RM8.25 million for the first quarter ended June 30, 2026 (1QFY2027), from RM5.39 million in the corresponding quarter a year earlier. Quarterly revenue increased 40.3% to RM79.82 million from RM56.88 million.

In a separate filing, Betamek said higher production volumes across its automotive product segments drove the stronger performance. Export sales also continued to expand, while efforts to diversify its customer base gained further traction. The group's ability to capture growing demand from both domestic and international markets has been a key driver of its recent success.

Segment Performance

Vehicle audio and video products remained the group's largest revenue contributor at RM45.34 million during the quarter, followed by vehicle accessories at RM24.35 million. Connectivity modules contributed RM6.77 million, reflecting the group's increasing participation in vehicles with higher electronic content. The growing contribution from connectivity modules is particularly noteworthy, as it signals Betamek's successful positioning in the rapidly evolving automotive electronics landscape, where vehicles are becoming increasingly dependent on sophisticated electronic systems.

Compared with the preceding quarter, revenue rose 20.9% from RM66.03 million, while net profit slipped 2.1% from RM8.43 million to RM8.25 million. The higher revenue was driven by stronger automotive production volumes, although margins were affected by the product mix and a weaker ringgit against currencies used to purchase raw materials. The margin compression highlights the ongoing challenges faced by manufacturers in managing input costs amid currency volatility and shifting product demand patterns.

Diversification and Export Growth

Revenue from non-major customers accounted for about 21% of total revenue during the quarter, up from approximately 18% a year earlier, while export sales made up about 18% of revenue, driven mainly by demand from Hong Kong and other regional markets. This diversification strategy reduces the group's reliance on a small number of key customers and provides greater resilience against market fluctuations in any single geography or customer segment.

The board declared a first interim dividend of 1.25 sen per share, payable on Aug 17. It also proposed a final dividend of 1.25 sen per share for FY2026, subject to shareholders' approval at the upcoming annual general meeting. The dividend announcements reflect the board's confidence in the group's financial position and its commitment to returning value to shareholders.

Management Commentary

Executive director Muhammad Fauzi Abd Ghani said the group's diversification efforts and higher production volumes had provided a solid foundation for sustainable long-term growth. He noted that the company's strategic focus on expanding its customer base and increasing its presence in export markets has positioned it well to capitalise on opportunities in the evolving automotive landscape.

"The first quarter results demonstrate the effectiveness of our growth strategy," Muhammad Fauzi said. "We remain committed to strengthening our market position through continuous innovation, operational excellence, and strategic partnerships that enhance our value proposition to customers."

Looking ahead, Betamek said it expects resilient domestic demand and a stable automotive sector to continue supporting its business despite global trade uncertainties and cost pressures. The Malaysian automotive market has shown remarkable resilience, with total industry volume remaining robust amid economic headwinds, providing a stable foundation for Betamek's domestic operations.

It added that it will continue investing in smart manufacturing, technology development and new growth initiatives, including commercialising its SafeSync360 infotainment project and collaborations in electric vehicle communication technologies. These initiatives align with broader industry trends toward vehicle electrification and digitalisation, positioning Betamek to capture opportunities in emerging high-growth segments.

Industry Context

The automotive electronics sector has been undergoing significant transformation, driven by the rapid adoption of electric vehicles, advanced driver assistance systems, and connected car technologies. Betamek's focus on connectivity modules and infotainment systems places it at the intersection of these trends, enabling it to benefit from the growing electronic content in modern vehicles.

The group's investment in SafeSync360, an infotainment project that integrates safety features with entertainment systems, represents a differentiated approach to product development. By combining safety and entertainment functionalities, Betamek is creating value-added solutions that appeal to both automakers and end consumers.

Collaborations in electric vehicle communication technologies further position the group for long-term growth as the global automotive industry accelerates its transition toward electrification. As EV adoption grows in Malaysia and across the region, demand for specialised electronic components and systems is expected to increase, creating new opportunities for suppliers like Betamek.

Outlook

The strong first-quarter performance positions Betamek well for the remainder of the financial year, with the group benefiting from both domestic automotive production growth and expanding export opportunities. The company's increasing participation in connectivity modules and EV communication technologies aligns with the broader industry shift toward vehicles with higher electronic content.

For investors, the dividend announcement and the group's growth trajectory signal confidence in its ability to navigate cost pressures while continuing to expand its market presence. The proposed final dividend of 1.25 sen per share for FY2026, subject to shareholder approval, would add to the first interim dividend, providing potential total dividends of 2.5 sen per share for the financial year.

The group's strategic focus on smart manufacturing and technology development is expected to enhance operational efficiency and product quality over the medium term. By investing in automation and digitalisation, Betamek aims to reduce production costs, improve consistency, and respond more quickly to customer requirements.

Management has indicated that the group will continue to explore new growth opportunities, including potential collaborations with international partners and expansion into new geographical markets. These initiatives are expected to further diversify the group's revenue base and reduce its exposure to any single market or customer segment.

Overall, Betamek's strong first-quarter performance and positive outlook reflect the group's successful execution of its growth strategy and its ability to capitalise on opportunities in the dynamic automotive electronics market. With a robust balance sheet, a clear strategic direction, and a commitment to innovation, the group is well-positioned to deliver sustainable long-term value to its shareholders.
