Is the 2023 Audi A8 a Good Car ?

Yes, the 2023 A8 is a good luxury large car. It hits all the marks you expect from a brand's top-of-the-line sedan, including executive-class seating, opulent materials, pampering ride quality and a wealth of technology.

Performance and handling from the base A8 and its turbocharged V6 engine are a little demure, so you'll have to consider the much-more-expensive Audi S8 if driving thrills are your priority.

Should I Buy the 2023 Audi A8?

The A8 is worth buying, but it's hard to outright recommend it as a winner against tough – and better – competition. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is more recently redesigned and continues to be the benchmark for luxury in the segment. The BMW 7 Series sports cutting-edge technology and is one of the sportier large cars you can buy.

Audi A8 Versus the Competition

Audi A8 vs. BMW 7 Series

The BMW 7 Series is fully redesigned for 2023 and emerges as a class front-runner. It handles with enthusiasm and features two potent engine options. Interior quality is top-notch, and it has plenty of cool features, including a 14.9-inch touch screen and a 31-inch drop-down video display for the second row. Like the A8, the 7 Series has sumptuous seating and a plush ride but also an undersized trunk. The BMW costs more in base form, but its performance-oriented trim (760i) is much less expensive than the comparable Audi S8.

Audi A8 vs. Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has one of the richest and most pampering interiors among luxury vehicles. In addition to spacious accommodations, this Benz is packed with infotainment and safety tech, and it has a wide range of horsepower options (and an even wider spread of prices). Cost is the biggest knock against this car: It starts at more than $110,000, with more expensive versions costing over $200,000. The base S-Class is fuel-efficient for the class, and all models nicely blend poised handling with world-class ride comfort.

A8 Interior: Executive Cruiser

2023 A8 Interior Quality

The 2023 Audi A8 has a cabin replete with top-notch materials and a classy, yet subdued, design. Little outside road or wind noise permeates the interior.

2023 A8 Infotainment, Bluetooth and Navigation

The A8's infotainment system consists of two touch screens – a 10.1-inch display above an 8.6-inch version – that command most of the car's controls. A volume knob is the only physical button you'll find.

Once you get past a learning curve, it's easy to operate the system. Snappy responses and sharp graphics make the A8 feel decidedly high-tech, and some inputs have haptic touch controls for satisfying feedback.

Standard infotainment features: 10.1-inch and 8.6-inch touch screens, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, satellite radio, wireless device charging, a 17-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo and navigation

Available infotainment features: a 23-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo

Additional standard features: a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster (Audi Virtual Cockpit), quad-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, a universal garage door opener and a panoramic sunroof

Other available features: multicolor ambient interior lighting and a rear-seat household-style power outlet

For more information, read What Is Apple CarPlay?, What Is Android Auto? and What Is Amazon Alexa Auto?

2023 A8 Cargo Space

The A8 has 12.5 cubic feet of trunk space, which is less than what most luxury large car rivals offer. However, it's still enough room for a few suitcases or numerous shopping bags.

How Many People Does the 2023 A8 Seat?

The A8 sedan seats five people. The front seats are wide and comfortable and feature standard niceties like 22-way power adjustments, heating and ventilation. You can also upgrade these seats with a massage function.

Extensive head- and legroom make the back seats hospitable for even the tallest people. Optional indulgences for the second row include power-adjustable heated, ventilated and massaging seats and the ability to remotely move the front passenger seat forward or back.

The high-performance S8 also comes standard with seating for five, and you can add the Rear Seat Comfort package that drops seating to four. The rear middle seat is replaced with a full-length leather-wrapped console that has fold-out tables, and all of the other rear-seat upgrades available in the base A8 are included in this package.

A8 Performance: It Gets the Job Done

2023 A8 Engine

The 2023 Audi A8 comes standard with a 335-horsepower turbocharged V6 engine. It has enough muscle to get the big sedan moving with ease, though you won't be overwhelmed by the acceleration. There's little turbo lag at tap-in, and the standard eight-speed automatic transmission shifts well.

Your only other engine option is the 563-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8 in the high-performance Audi S8. It's a lot more authoritative, which is evident by its claimed zero-to-60-mph time of 3.8 seconds. The base A8 can go from zero to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds.

2023 A8 Gas Mileage

The 2023 A8 gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, which is about average for a luxury large car. The S8 returns an estimated 15 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

A8 Ride and Handling

With a standard adaptive air suspension and all-wheel drive, the A8 drives and rides well. It corners confidently and absorbs rough pavement without breaking a sweat. Still, this isn't the most nimble car in the class.
