It is not simply beach bumming in Bintan anymore but more unusual experiences that keep drawing visitors towards places like the Bintan family terrace, as they opt for this exceptional island for their holidays. Read on to discover some of these authentic experiences in Bintan.

Senggarang Water Village

Step back in time as you land at this charming floating village from your water taxi (pompon). It is just a 15-minute ride from the Bintan port in the capital city, Tanjung Pinang. Alternatively, one can do a 45-minute drive by road.

Home to one of the earliest Chinese Immigrants in Bintan Senggarang Water Village has a laid-back atmosphere much appreciated by visitors in contrast to the busy city vibes. The numerous stilt houses lining the coast are their homely abodes showcasing the simple and uncomplicated lifestyle of these Teochews. This village is also home to two iconic landmarks the 200-year-old Banyan Tree Temple and Vihara Dharma Sasana Temple Complex (also known as Lau Ya Keng). The warm and hospitable locals welcome visitors and are happy when their local snacks are purchased.

Penyengat Island

An island off the capital Tanjung Pinang, Penyengat has been the home of the kings of the Malay Kingdom with their palaces built on this tiny island towards the latter phase of the kingdom. The restored palace of the Sultan carries artefacts, ancient monuments and other items of historical and cultural significance. It is expected for visitors to be conservatively dressed when visiting this island.

Getting to this island too can be done on board a pompon from Tanjung Pinang and exploring the island can even be done on foot at leisure or using a becak. (motorized trishaw) as sometimes preferred by guests from hotels such as The Residence Bintan.

Another fascinating feature is what is called the Jewel of this island, the Masjid Raya Sultan Riau Grand Mosque built on higher ground giving it respect and reverence it has a beautiful façade and is home to a 150-year-old handwritten Quran apart from other interesting elements of architecture.

Vihara Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva

Also known as 500 Lohan Temple, this is considered a treasure of Bintan. Situated in South Bintan, in the Kijang area, this is a short drive from the city of Tanjung Pinang.

Upon entering this temple, one is in awe of the 500 life-sized stone statues of Lohan or arhats of Buddhist culture. The intricate craftsmanship showcases the physique and facial expressions in such detail that each statue is distinct. An awe-inspiring temple worth seeing.

A memorable dinner

Apart from seeking and being inspired by authentic Bintan culture and heritage, Bintan also has treats for families spending quality time together.

A sunset dinner by the sea is an ideal way to wind up an interesting day of exploring Bintan. Plan to have a family dinner overlooking the sea. (to make it have a memorable backdrop) Many restaurants in the city can cater to your request, with pre-dinner drinks, and a delectable meal of your choice followed by desserts to make it a complete dinner experience. This will be a highlight of the trip looked forward to by family members.
