A random cluster of 1192 islands scattered across the gleaming Indian Ocean, the Maldives archipelago offers a warm tropical climate throughout the year. Once you have decided on your holiday in the Maldives for sheer indulgence with luxury and water sports, a family escapade for quality time together or a romantic rendezvous with your partner, find the most desirable time for your visit. These tips will help you decide when to travel.

Introduction

At the very outset, you must be clear about what you intend to do in the Maldives. If you want to spend a lot of time outdoors, especially snorkelling or diving, then dry weather is important. What is the budget?  Such as, are you prepared to pay more to travel during dry periods when even the crowds are more, and the hotel and flight rates tend to be higher? Or do you like to travel during periods when the rates are lower, and the crowds are less, and you still get to enjoy the outdoors?

This fine balance of what you want to do and how you do it within the budget must be worked out whether you are travelling alone, with your family or just the two of you. After all, you want relaxation and to have a good time. Some visitors want to enjoy the dry weather for optimum enjoyment during their holiday as well as using one of the best Maldives resorts and are happy to pay that price. Find where your preference lies.

The dry season in the Maldives

The dry season in the Maldives is from November to April. This period is considered the best time for travel as it is warm and dry and not so humid.

The months of January and February are dry, and it is sunny and nice, these months are peak months in the Maldives early reservations must be done while higher rates apply. During the Easter Holiday Break families flock to the Maldives to soak in the sun and sand. Reservations need to be made ahead of time, and the hotel rates are higher. Travelling during March and April avoiding the short easter break is better on the budget as rates are lower and you have the benefit of more privacy as the crowds are less.

It is also good to bear in mind that even during the dry season there can be a random shower of rain, these are brief, and you can still enjoy the outdoors.

If you are keen to avoid the rain altogether, it is best to consider the months of February and March in the northern atolls. Most guests holidaying during these months use resorts such as Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon in the Northern Atolls.

The wet season in the Maldives

The wet season in the Maldives is from May to November and during this period though there is sunshine and warmth there is the risk of heavy showers and thunderstorms. The good thing is these passes over quickly and the sun comes out.

However, for lovers of underwater sports like diving and snorkelling underwater visibility is not good during these months and it will not be as enjoyable as during the dry season. Many visitors still travel during this period as the temperatures are milder and hotel rates are much lower. If your interests are other than diving and snorkelling, most other water sports can still be enjoyed.

The month of December is a monsoon transitional month, hence although there may be sunshine it is prone to rain. Up to Christmas time hotel rates are reasonable in December.

Other useful Points

Apart from considerations of weather, and hotel charges, be aware of the following.

December (Around Christmas time and beyond) to February are peak travel periods to the Maldives as the Western World starts holidays and looks for warmer climes.

Just like the hotel rates soar during the peak months so do flight rates, be mindful to book in advance if using peak travel times. Similarly, during off-peak times flight rates will also drop.

Apart from knowing about the weather patterns of the Maldives, your decisions about the budget, period of travel and what you intend to do have a bearing on the best time to travel to Maldives for good weather. Because even the dry season can be having showers due to the monsoons.
