Galicica National Park

The Bay of Bones, one of North Macedonia’s most intriguing archeological monuments, is located along the shores of Lake Ohrid. The prehistoric pile-dwelling hamlet that once stood here over 3,000 years ago has been recreated into an outdoor museum. The structure, which was constructed on wooden stilts, overlooks the lake and offers visitors an insight into the Bronze and Iron Ages. Take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the sparkling waters of the lake, stroll along the wooden pathways that connect the thatched houses, and tour the small museum with antiquated relics.

The breathtaking Galicica National Park is a wild and amazing area to visit, situated between Lakes Ohrid and Prespa. Nature lovers will enjoy hiking through the pristine and unspoiled valleys, forests, and mountains.

Numerous high peaks can be found in the national park, which is dominated by the Galicica limestone massif between the two lakes. While hiking, you can enjoy tiny mountain villages and see wildlife and assorted plants.

Lake Ohrid, which lies on the border between Macedonia and Albania, is breathtaking, surrounded by mountains with gorgeous, crystal-clear blue waters. It is one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe and vital to the complex ecosystem. Numerous indigenous species, including freshwater snails and predatory fish, make their home here. The winding coastline includes towns and villages like Ohrid and Struga, along with serene beaches and wonderful woodlands. Water activities include swimming, boating, and fishing.

When it comes to natural wonders, Matka Canyon is among the top attractions in North Macedonia. It is a breathtaking sight to see towering limestone cliffs rising above emerald-green waters. The best way to take it all in is by boat or kayak.

Surrounded by striking rock formations and secret monasteries nestled into the cliffs, paddle your way across the tight canyon. One of the deepest underwater caverns in the world, Verlo Cave, is also accessible by boat.

Mavrovo National Park is the largest national park in the country. You can enjoy the amazing scenery while hiking, mountain biking, or on horseback.

Mavrovo National Park features Mavrovo Lake, an artificial lake created in the 1940s. This lake was formed when a dam was built on the Mavrovo River to generate electricity. It is surrounded by picturesque green mountains and forests, making it a scenic spot for visitors.

The half-submerged St. Nicholas Church is a very amazing site that can be seen taking a boat ride on the lake.

Mavrovo is also home to the highest peaks in the country, with plenty of rock climbing opportunities and skiing in the winter.

Pelister National Park was created in 1948 and is a mountainous region that includes the Baba Mountain massif.

Among the wildlife making their homes here are bears, wolves, and soaring eagles.

Amidst the majestic peaks, Pelister is the nation’s oldest national park and home to two magnificent glacial lakes with a charming name, Pelister’s Eyes.

The park is great for hiking among routes winding through valleys and woodlands.

Take the challenge and climb to the top of Mount Pelister.

One of the top attractions in North Macedonia is the St. Naum Monastery, which is perched on a cliff with a view of Lake Ohrid. The monastery was established in the ninth century by St. Naum of Ohrid and is surrounded by natural beauty.

The monastery is surrounded by gardens with free-roaming peacocks.

The tomb of St. Naum, which the locals believe has therapeutic properties and vibrant frescoes, can be found inside. You can reach the monastery by ferry or boat.

Fertile soils may be found in the rolling hills and valleys of the Tikves Wine Region, which is well-known for its wine. The warm temperatures is ideal for growing grapes, and the region has been producing wine since the fourth century BC.

Taking a tour of the serene surroundings and stopping at attractive wineries and vineyards to sample the local produce is a delightful experience. Along the way you can enjoy the many chapels, lakes, and gorges in the region.
