Despite being one of Greece’s smaller national parks, Cape Sounion National Park is definitely worth a visit since it is home to the famous Temple of Poseidon. Located 65 meters above the Aegean Sea on a striking cliff, this ancient temple was constructed in 444 BC. It has become a famous landmark.
In addition, the park has charming villages, short hiking routes, and great sand beaches.

Mt. Olympus National Park is the first national park in Greece, created in 1938. Known as the fabled home of the Greek gods, their national park is rich in mythology and history. The park is home to more than 1,700 plant species, including rare and endemic ones, and serves as a haven to wildlife, among them deer, wolves, and jackals.

Within the park is the tallest peak in Greece, Mount Olympus. You can take up the challenge and climb to the summit, where you’ll find fifteen mountain refuges along the forests' routes.

If you’re craving some wilderness, Mt. Parnitha National Park is about an hour’s drive from Athens and an ideal getaway from the bustling city. The park offers hiking paths and cave systems surrounded by lush forest. It is great for hiking, climbing, biking, and canyoning activities.

The park is home to a large population of uncommon red deer.

The largest marine protected area in Europe is the National Marine Park of Alonnisos, created in 1992. The coastal waters surrounding Alonnisos Island and the Northern Sporades archipelago are included in this Greek national park.

The park’s primary goal is to save the Mediterranean monk seal, which is endangered, along with a few other uncommon seabird species.
During the summer full-day boat excursions are available through the pristine water across the park from Alonnisos and Skopelos (pictured above).
Visitors might encounter dolphins, sea turtles, and at times the secretive monk seal.

For those who wish to learn more about marine life, the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, which is located on the Bay of Laganas, is an amazing place. The park was established to save one of the most vulnerable marine animals in Europe, the endangered loggerhead turtle. Up to 1300 loggerhead nests have been reported in this national park in recent years, making it an important nesting location. To safeguard the turtles, nesting beaches are off-limits to visitors at night during the breeding season, running from May to October. Snorkeling excursions around the island during the day provide an opportunity to witness these amazing animals.

Northern Pindos National Park is situated north of Ioannina. There are beautiful rivers, thick forests, blooming meadows, and clear lakes to explore.

Within the park is Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest in the world.

The park is also home to the verdant Valia Kalda Forest.

Wild animals making their home here include foxes, chamois, hawks, otters, and bears.

Northern Pindos National Park includes Mt. Smolikas, the second-highest peak in Greece.

Another popular destination for outdoor lovers is Parnassos Nationa Park, which is close to the historic site of Delphi. The park is home to three majestic peaks—Parnassos, Tsarkos, and Gerondovrachos. It is popular with trekkers and rock climbers. Because Kefalionian fir, spruce, and juniper blanket the mountain slopes, hiking in this park is a wonderful experience. Vibrant shrubs and the uncommon purple-flowered Daphne jasminea thrive between the trees. In the winter the park becomes a thriving ski resort.

The historic Prespa Lakes are the focal point of Prespa National Park, a wildlife haven in northern Greece. Among the oldest lakes in Europe are Mikri Prespa and Magali Prespa. They provide abundant biodiversity and tranquil beauty. The region is home to quaint highland communities that provide a tranquil starting point for exploring this amazing park.
Brown bears, wolves, and wild pigs are just a few of the many animals that depend on this national park.

With more than 260 bird species, including the largest colony of Dalmatian and great white pelicans in the world, the lakes are a sanctuary for birdwatchers.

Without doubt, one of the most breathtaking destinations in Greece is the island of Crete. It is home to the Samaria National Park, created to save the critically endangered krikri, a kind of wild goat exclusive to Crete.

The park includes the famous Samaria Gorge, which is among the longest and most striking in Europe.
