Wandering in Belgium
National parks and theme parks

Situated across the southern tip of Luxembourg province in Wallonia, Ardennes meridionales Nature Park encompasses rolling plateaus, deep river valleys, and extensive forests. The park stretches from the Semois River in the north to the French border in the south. It is dominated by mixed deciduous and coniferous forests interspersed with open meadows and farmland.
The wildlife making their homes here include wild boar, red deer, and roe deer that roam the extensive woodlands. European badgers and red foxes are common throughout the park, while pine martens inhabit the older coniferous stands.

Birdlife is particularly diverse, with black woodpeckers, middle spotted woodpeckers, and honey buzzards nesting in mature forests. Peregrine falcons breed on rocky outcrops along the deeper valleys, and red kites soar over the open agricultural plateaus.

The Vallee de la Semois National Park is located in the Luxembourg province of Wallonia, stretching along the Semois River. It encompasses one of the most iconic river landscapes in the country. The Semois is known for its amazing series of incised meanders, where the river loops through gorges in a serpentine pattern with dramatic viewpoints and cliff-ringed bends.

The river valley is overlooked by the medieval castle of Bouillon, sitting on a rocky spur.
Peregrine falcons nest on the cliff faces above the river's meanders, while eagle owls have returned to breed on the most remote rocky outcrops. European otters have been confirmed along the waterway. The mature forests shelter black woodpeckers, middle spotted woodpeckers, and honey buzzards. Red deer and wild boar are abundant throughout the forested valley slopes. Bats, including several rare species, roost in the limestone caves and rock fissures along the valley.
