Travelling While Anxious
The in's and out's of how I travel while managing my anxiety.
Anxiety. My old friend who I hate talking to and sometimes even refused to acknowledge. I have a love/hate relationship with you, especially when it comes to traveling.
On the one hand, traveling with anxiety makes me more prepared than a girl scout which can be a great help when traveling with a child because let's face it... No one wants to feel the wrath of a child how has left their soft toy behind.
On the other hand, it makes over prepared and mildly neurotic, which probably infuriates my husband but I'm sure he's grateful I've never let us forget ANYTHING.
I have come to notice this downside more so of late with all the traveling I have been doing. Whether it's just a short two-hour road trip or planning a week-long trip with four plane rides involved, both have triggered my anxiety big time and caused me to be pedantic about every little travel detail and possible scenario.
How early to we need to get to the airport? Because someone online said that this airline gives away your seats if you aren't there early enough.
Have we budgeted for the gas for the car we rented?
We haven't paid for checked luggage so what do we do if out carry on bags are too big? because I haven't budgeted for that.
So... how do I manage it without annoying the crap out of my family?
- Always make a list. This seems logical but my list is incredibly detailed. It includes what to pack clothes wise with the number of each item required. What medications to take, food, water bottles, first aid stuff, bags, camera, chargers, toys, journal, etc, etc, etc.
- Always triple check packing with the list and once everything is in the car. Once we are all packed, I go through the list to double/triple check that everyone has everything they need. Then I check everything again once we are in the car to make sure we haven't left anything in the house.
- Get a good nights sleep for at least two nights before traveling. Getting a good nights sleep before traveling is a necessity but having at least two nights of good sleep is far better and can really help with the packing process. This means no late night TV binge watching. Go to bed at a decent time.
- Meditate. Meditating can be really helpful if I have wound myself up in knots over things that may or may not happen while on holiday. Doing five minutes in the morning and five minutes before bed can make a huge difference.
- Journal, journal, journal. Journaling is such a helpful tool. I journal about all the good things that are going to happen on the trip to put all those juicy good vibes out into the universe. But I also journal about the things that could go wrong as well. This helps to get them out of my head and makes it easy to turn each problem into a positive and for me to see how ridiculous they are.
- Advice. Getting advice from others on the places you are planning to go is a great way to help clear out any fears I have. Getting advice on the places i'm going, places to stay, where to eat, what i can and can't take on the plane etc all help to put my mind at ease.
That's just some of the things I go through before going on holiday. I'm 1000 percent sure that I probably do alot of other things in the lead up to our holidays that drives my hubby bonkers but he's not writing this, so...
Always be sure to ask for help if you need it. Don't be afraid to admit that your anxiety is driving you up the wall because let's face it, it does that at least 4-20 hours a day so people may as well know what is going on. And if they don't like it or treat you differently because of it, well they weren't worth having around anyways so "jog on" mate.
