Whether you are looking for a last-minute getaway at the end of a tough week or just fancy a bit of a change, Europe has some of the best destinations for a long weekend trip. Full of great transport links, lots to see and do and some amazing cuisine, choosing where to go is the only real challenge you’ll face.

Europe is also one of the most favorite destination continent among others.

1. Rome

Pack your comfy shoes, this bustling city has lots to do and see (most of it on foot). With twenty-five centuries of historical sights, The Vatican on its doorstep and some pretty impressive hotels, Rome has a lot to offer.

The international airport is well serviced, so it is worth booking flights that get in early and leave late. This way you can make the most of your time here. There is simply too much to see in one long weekend so making sure you have as many minutes as you can will be worth the inconvenience of travelling at unsocial times. It is also worth planning in advance and working out exactly what you want to see while you’re here, Rome is not a city for winging it.

2. London

London has something for everyone. From warehouse raves to yuppie hangouts, a long weekend here can be whatever you make it. If you do want to see all the tourist sights, it is best to visit in the winter (but avoid Christmas) when the streets are a little less crowded. Invest in a visitor pass that provides entry to multiple attractions to save money in this expensive city.

The food in England has a pretty poor reputation but in the capital it is completely unwarranted. With a diverse mix of nationalities settling in the city, you can sample amazing cuisine from all corners of the globe here. Opt for the best Lebanese restaurant in London or sample cuisine from Mexico, Greece, India, Japan and a hundred other far-flung destinations.

3. Paris

Ah, the city of lights. Beautiful Paris is another must-see destination that is perfect for a weekend break. With some of the world’s best hotels and a reputation for romance, Paris is the perfect city in which to celebrate an anniversary or birthday.

The city has great transport links so you won’t waste too much time travelling, regardless of where you are coming from. By and large, the locals disappear for the summer season, so it is best to visit Paris in the autumn and winter. Time your visit to coincide with events, such as Nuit Blanche, an all-night arts and culture event. This means you get the most from your short stay and really feel as though you’ve had a break from the ordinary.

4. Barcelona

If the kind of city where you have to walk miles is not really your idea of a break, Barcelona might just be the perfect location. With its award winning beaches, this is a city for sun seekers and those in need of a bit of rest and relaxation.

The beach scene in Barcelona is like no other. Bars on the beach serve cocktails throughout the day and pump reggae music out across the white sands. Of course, to make the most of this you need to visit in the summer when the sun is shining (and the tourists are out). If you fancy a slightly less crowded Barcelona experience, check into one of the many luxury hotels with its own roof terrace. This way you get to soak up all the fun of the city from a sun lounger by a quiet pool. Bliss!
