There are so many coffee houses and places to go. But the only problem is that not many shops open early in the morning. Luckily a few of the places I will mention in this top ten list of wonderful coffee places downtown will help curb any problems finding pastries, fresh coffee, and people-watching in the oldest city.

1. Chocolattes 47 Cordova St, St. Augustine, FL 32084

Chocolattes used to be known as the Chocolate Turtle; it's an all-women business. Chocolattes is owned and operated by Lisa D'Allaire and her ladies. Fresh coffee and scratch-baked desserts and pastries on Cordova Street are delicious in the morning when the rest of downtown slumbers into the afternoon. They are open from 8 am to 9 pm most days of the week.

2. Saint Augustine Coffee House 6 Saint George St. Suite 107 Saint Augustine FL, 32084

The Saint Augustine Coffee House is a literal hole-in-the-wall coffee shop. You can purchase delicious soups and pastries as well as a weekly rotation of a craft beer fridge. They are right next to the Saint George Inn. Grab yourself a coffee, pastry, beer, or wine and sit outside by the lovely fountain and enjoy the wonders of Florida weather when it's not too cold. They are usually open 7 am to 9 pm on weekends, 8 am to 8 pm on weekdays.

3. Sweetwater Coffee & Art Gallery 8 Granada St. Saint Augustine FL, 32084

Sweetwater is the newest coffee shop since 2019. It is an art gallery where you can purchase art from the owner Sloane Keats or craft items from her daughter. Sloane works on acrylic paint and large canvases, mimicking more impressionist styles such as Monet. Her daughter is a recent college graduate of Flagler College and works in oil-based medium paints. Her daughter's painting inspirations are based on: Georgia O'Keefe, Frida Kahlo, and Diego Rivera. The Keats family run the coffee shop and moved from Miami before the height of the pandemic. Sweetwater is always open for the Friday art walks, the first Friday of the month every month of the year.

4. Juniper Market 48 San Marco Ave. Saint Augustine FL, 32084

Juniper Market used to be in the 1908 Gray House but have since moved to their location by the 360 Boutique. They have wonderful coffee and not a drop is wasted. If you want cold coffee, they put cubes of coffee in your drink for an extra kick. Their Vietnamese Coffee is excellent for those who need a large IV dose of caffeine. You can also check out local teas, honey, and other goodies in their merchandise corner. They are open from 8 am to 3 pm most days.

5. Cuban Bakery & Cafe 100 Saint George St. Saint Augustine FL, 32084

This Cuban Bakery is the real deal if you are looking for authentic Miami flare. The family moved from Miami to the Saint Augustine area. They also own a Churro shop by State Road 312 and serve delicious Cafe Con Leche (Coffee with Milk for those non-Spanish speakers). Their guava and cheese pastries are just like the ones you find everywhere on Calle Ocho or 8th Street. They are open from 10 am to 6 pm most days.

6. Coffee House Realty Cafe 47 San Marco Ave. Saint Augustine FL, 32084

This is the newest coffee shop in the area. A couple from the Keys moved North and settled down in Saint Augustine. Just like Sweetwater, the husband, Theo, makes art to sell. Most of his images are based on the Keys and other places in Florida. His style is more Cezanne than most other impressionists, but it works for his mediums and many different canvases he uses to make these eye-catching delights. Theo's wife makes delicious pastries and her chocolate croissants are to die for if you never had one before. They are open most days around 7 am to 5 pm and closed on Mondays.

7. Relampago Coffee Lab 74 Spanish St. Saint Augustine FL, 32084

Relampago is another hole-in-the-wall coffee shop located one block from Saint George and near The Floridian restaurant. It is a sister company of DOS Coffee and Wine further up to San Marco Avenue. Their pastries and desserts are much like the DOS location, but they have a better tea selection if you are into more variety. Relampago also has Kombucha on tap, the apple cider vinegar-based variety. They are open 8 am to 2 pm most days with extended hours on the weekends.

8. DOS Coffee & Wine 300 San Marco Ave. Saint Augustine FL, 32084

DOS is a great spot for coffee, beer on tap, and local food trucks in the area. They also have a venue hall behind their store that can be reserved for wedding receptions or ceremonies. You're not far from Creme de la Coca, a local bakery, which is across the street. DOS is open from 7 am to 7 pm most days.

9. Kookaburra Coffee

Kookaburra Coffee has several coffee locations all over Saint Augustine. It is a local chain that has fingers in many of its breakfast pies. All Kookaburra chains are open usually between 7 am to 7 pm with different extended hours in a few locations. I usually get the iced coffee, but anything Aussie Diesel has strong espresso if you need a pick-up.

10. City Perks Coffee Co. 15 Saint George St. Saint Augustine FL, 32084

City Perks opened up before the pandemic. It is one of the late-hour coffee shops near the Spanish fort, Castillo San Marcos. City Perks is open from 8 am to 8 pm. They have certain drinks on tap. They are in the same building as the local wine bar, about a literal foot away from their coffee bar. Make sure to get some coffee after visiting City Gate Distillery in the building across the way.
