Things to do in Moncton, New Brunswick

Unique to do in Moncton

Moncton is New Brunswick's largest city in terms of population and, due to its central location in the Maritime Provinces, has become an important neighborhood center. Moncton's economy is particularly strong and diverse, making it a great city for finding work and spending hard-earned dollars.

As a result, Moncton's entertainment, excitement, and leisure facilities make it a great base for travelers to the nearby Bay of Fundy. Check out the options below to see what to do in Moncton and the surrounding area to make the most of your trip. And make sure to book your flight tickets to Moncton.

See Street Art

I’m a huge fan of street art. I love how it makes the city more vibrant and colorful, and makes old, boring brick buildings more fun and beautiful. I was very excited then to learn that Moncton has quite a street art scene. Back in 2015, Moncton hosted the Festival Inspire, a multi-day event in which street artists came to the city and each was given the outer wall of a building in the city center to exchange one of their artwork.

The year of the inauguration was a success and was brought back in 2016 with the participation of artists from all over the world. 2017 permit plans are already well underway and are expected to be even better than last year. Most of the works can be found in the city center. There is an interactive map that you can use to help you access all the artwork, or you can access it as a garbage hunt and let your instincts guide you around the city.

Magnetic Forging

About a 15-minute drive from downtown Moncton is Magnetic Hill, a type of “gravity hill” where your car seems to roll uphill when the car is in neutral. (Warning about the spoiler!) Before I get excited about some strange geological phenomenon, I should say it’s all-optical deception. This is due to the changing terrain and the perspective of the road.

We did it twice (because, hey, it cost $ 6 and we wanted to get our money, ha!). For the first time, you are instructed to park in a neutral position and steer the car back to the "mountain". But for the second time, we chose to turn the car forward and from that perspective, we saw that we were actually driving downhill. Tourist? absolutely.

Is it appropriate to laugh? Guaranteed. Definitely worth a visit, even to say you did it. There is also a zoo, a water park, and even a winery on Magnetic Hill!

Magnetic Hill Winery

As for wine, after a fun stroll (or downhill?) Visit Magnetic Hill Winery. The Magnetic Hill Winery, located in a homestead as old as Canada (1867!), Is not your average winery. Here, the wines are not made from grapes, but from fruit - strawberries, blueberries, and even rhubarb are used to make award-winning wines.

Wine enthusiasts often write off fruit wines quickly, but don’t be disappointed until you try them - these delicious wines have intricate flavors that will surprise the snouts themselves. Visitors can learn about the brief history of the original house and what it took to restore it, how the winery started, and taste some of the locally produced wines.

A great afternoon treat is their combination of Picnic Basket Wine and Cheese, where you choose cheese, crackers, and a bottle of wine and enjoy it all on your outdoor terrace with panoramic views of Moncton.

Hopewell Rocks

The biggest affair of New Brunswick’s fame is the legendary Flower Pot Rocks at Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park. Located a 30-minute drive south of Moncton, you can spend the day here. Located in Fundy Bay, where the world's largest flood displacement occurs, water levels change from 11 to 16 meters daily.

During low tide, you can walk straight to the ocean floor and then kayak around (and even over) the flowerpot rocks over the tide! We spent the whole day here and enjoyed every minute. Mother Nature is charming and it is an experience you cannot get anywhere else in the world.

Shediac Bay Lobster Cruise

You can’t come to New Brunswick and not enjoy at least one lobster dinner. This is one of the freshest places you can get it! Head to Shediac Bay, about a 30-minute drive east of Moncton, for a lobster cruise with Shediac Bay Cruises. This lobster-themed cruise will take you to Shediac Bay, teaching you about the lobster industry in New Brunswick; how the lobster trap works, and how to fry the lobster perfectly (note that it must always be served belly up to keep the juice in the shell), and how to properly shell the lobster.

The cruise is led by the fantastic, humorous Captain Ron, who used to be a lobster fisherman. Taking you on your cruise, it easily switches from English to French and will entertain children and adults during this 2.5-hour experience. Of course, the highlight is the lobster dinner itself - all the lobster is served with a seafood-style potato salad and cabbage salad. It was fresh and delicious and one of our favorite lobster eating experiences during our trip to Atlantic Canada.

Where to Stay

If you are looking for accommodation in Moncton, I highly recommend L'Hôtel St. James, the only luxury Moncton hotel. Located in the heart of the city, in the 19th century. in a brick building, it is in a great location so you can explore the city on foot or easily get in the car and explore the surrounding area.

The hotel has 9 rooms with spacious washrooms, plasma TVs, cable, internet, and modern décor. A continental breakfast is included in the price, and a glass of wine is provided on arrival, a welcome treat after a long day exploring Moncton and the surrounding area!
