It’s no secret that each generation is unique. Everything from your outlook on life, to your level of familiarity with technology, to your favorite weekend hobbies are impacted and shaped by your generational experiences. Even things as standard banking habits vary greatly between generations! But, these differences shouldn’t be glazed over.

Generally speaking, we as people tend to feel most comfortable in environments where our needs are heard and met appropriately. So, it’s important to take these generational differences into account when making big life decisions: like finding the right city to call home.

Generation Z isn’t looking for cities to retire in, but Baby Boomers might be. And odds are, Generation X probably isn’t on the lookout for cities to raise a newborn baby, though this may be a top-priority for Millennials.

The different stages of life have vastly different needs. The team at TYE Medical took this into account, and identified the cities in the U.S. that are best-suited for each generation. They used a combination of factors uniquely important to each generation to calculate a score for the 50 largest metropolitan areas across the nation. Data was collected from the U.S. Census and other publicly available resources. Read on to see what they found!

Pittsburgh, PA, is reportedly the best city for Baby Boomers to call home. With an incredible city score of 24.5 out of 25, Pittsburgh beats out the second-best city (St. Louis, MO) by over 4 points! Another notable aspect of the research is that the top 10 cities for Baby Boomers are concentrated in the eastern part of the country. Three of these cities are in Florida-- which is unsurprising, given Florida is home to the city with the highest median age. This list of the top Baby Boomer cities have the largest range of scores, suggesting there are more noticeable differences between each of the locations.

Generation X, on the other hand, is best off in Atlanta, GA, with a city score of 22.6. Close behind at a score of 21.6 is San Francisco, CA. The two cities scored highly in open management-level jobs, best school quality, and generational presence.

These top 10 cities for Generation X are spread throughout the country. Seattle, WA, and Denver, CO, were the only two cities to earn a score of less than 17. It looks like many cities suit the needs of Generation X!

Millennials can find comfort and joy in Salt Lake City, UT! With a city score of 21.4, Salt Lake City scored 1.3 points higher than second-place city Washington, D.C. With plenty of entry-level jobs, lower median home prices, and a high number of other Millennials in the city, these two Western cities are perfect for this generation. The top 10 best cities for Millennials also feature more west-coast locations than any other generation, such as Seattle, WA, San Francisco and San Jose, CA, and Portland, OR.

Salt Lake City, UT, takes first place in the rankings once again, but this time for Generation Z. This beautiful city was ranked as the best city for Gen Z, with a score of 20! Across the country in the East, there is a cluster of top-ranked Generation Z cities in New England, including Hartford, CT, Boston, MA, and Providence, RI.

Washington, DC was the only city that ranks in the top 10 best cities for every generation-- so perhaps if your family crosses multiple generational borders, it’s the place for you!
