Container homes & tiny homes are very popular here in Costa Rica. You don't need much square footage. All your living is done outside!

Many of the people who we assist in acquiring their legal status here in Costa Rica want to start fresh! Quite a few of them are at a crossroads in their lives and are dreaming of downsizing. . making it simpler to live, with less responsibility and DEFINITELY living with less STUFF! Perhaps their kids are out of college and on their own now. They want, and NEED a new situation. They can taste their well-deserved freedom from stress, deadlines and those very long and energy-zapping "to-do" lists. They definitely don't want a huge home to take care of!

Take a quick survey of your life right now. Are you like most people? Do you have a garage, backyard shed and/or a basement full of so many things that you don't use. . boxes that are stacked up as high as the ceiling? When's the last time you used that pogo stick? Or that old computer screen? How about those 5 broken bicycles, one missing its handlebars and the other 4 with flat tires. . or no tires at all? It's at the point of being ridiculous, isn't it? These reasons, my friends, are why we stay busy. Everyone is looking to write a new chapter in their lives, and Costa Rica seems to be a popular location to do so.

There are many excellent builders in Costa Rica. There are more success stories than horror stories here when it comes to home construction. Many of these new residents have simply done their homework. They search out others who have built a home here already, asked a lot of questions and then they start the process for themselves. It seems like everyone is going smaller nowadays. They just don't want the hassle of having to work too hard to keep their house in working order! It's as simple as that! Less is more. .

Some of the best new construction that I have seen here personally utilizes the outdoors as one of the biggest living areas. One of my friends here purchased two 20-foot containers and two 40-foot containers. He arranged the larger containers sitting across from one another, with each 20-footer sitting on top of each of the bigger ones. They have two, two-story homes. They rent one out during the high season and that pays for the one in which they live! In the middle area between the two units, they built a little overhang that shields them from the rain. They spend most all of their time in this area. The landscaping and garden areas that they created attract butterflies and hummingbirds. They planted citrus trees all around the perimeter of their two homes as well. Lots of mangos, limes and other fruits that I can't even pronounce! They even have a pineapple patch! They're living life totally immersed in nature. They wake up to the sounds of howler monkeys. . they drink their morning coffee while watching the hummingbirds land on the bird feeders and they drink their glass or two of wine while watching the sun set! It's indeed a PURA VIDA lifestyle for them. They've created a little slice of paradise for themselves.

Another gentleman from Oregon just had a tiny home built. It is only about 400 square feet, but he lives alone and it is perfect for him. He had just gotten a divorce, sold his HUGE 3,600 sq. foot home and now lives an easy life. He had a large deck with a long overhang built all around his tiny home and of course, he spends most of his time outside. When it rains, he is protected. A portion of the outside area has a grill and a small refrigerator, so he doesn't have to walk very far to turn the steak or to grab another beer.

Both of these people had one thing in common. . they decided to DOWNSIZE and they both did their due diligence and found a good builder. All they had to do was find a nice piece of land and the rest fell into place perfectly!

If you're thinking about moving to Costa Rica in 2021 and want to create a simpler life for yourself, PLEASE don't be in any hurry. . give yourself enough time to plan everything out. Because you are in another country, you need to surround yourself with people who you can trust. This comes only from getting referrals from people who have built homes here already. They can share with you some of the problems they had in THEIR building process. That is valuable information!

My suggestion is to start by googling information about building a home in Costa Rica. Your internet search will provide lots of links to builders, "how-to" sites, expat groups who's members have already built homes here and other pertinent info. If you are considering building a tiny home or a container home, the GOOD NEWS is that there are many builders who specialize in this type of construction. You'll learn so much and you'll have a lot of fun.

One last point. . are you going to bring all of your OLD STUFF with you or are you going to start fresh? That is a decision that requires a lot of attention and consideration. Keep in mind that for the price of shipping everything, you can buy new here! There are pros and cons on both sides, so if you would like some ideas, contact us at [email protected]. Whatever you decide, have fun and enjoy the journey! You'll love it here in Costa Rica, one of the happiest countries on the planet!
