The Lake District:

Travelling Through the world of Writers and Poets

The Lake District is a breathtakingly beautiful place, and it should come as no surprise that poets and writers have been drawn to this region for centuries. It’s hard not to feel inspired by the natural beauty of this area – from Lake Windermere to Lake Coniston, there are many places where you can see what British authors saw when they penned their best works.

It's been a while since I've last visited this area but there is something about the Lake Districts that haunts you for the rest of time - I mean that in a good way. So many different people have been inspired by the Lakes from Beatrix Potter to William Wordsworth, and even singers like Taylor Swift. While I am no means an expert of this place I do feel like if you make a trip to England it should be near the top of your list.

To help fellow artists find inspiration in the Lake District, I’ve put together a list of some great literary locations that every writer should visit at least once!

Lake Windermere: Lake Windermere is the largest natural lake in England and a great place to start your literary Lake District exploration. Wordsworth House sits right on Lake Windermere, where you can walk through the house that inspired some of William Wordsworth’s most famous poems. If you want to get outside onto the water, rent a boat and take a little trip across the water.

Grasmere Lake: Grasmere is a beautiful lake located just south of Lake Windermere. This was the home of William Wordsworth and his family for many years, and it’s easy to see why he was inspired by the area. Stop by Dove Cottage, which is now a museum dedicated to Wordsworth’s life and work and is something which is both magical and informative and well worth a quick stop.

Coniston Lake: Coniston is a large lake located in the central part of the Lake District. It’s popular with rowers and sailors, and it’s also home to the National Trust property Brantwood which was once the home of John Ruskin, one of the most important figures in Victorian art and literature.

if you are interested in Beatrix Potter then a trip to the Lake District is a must. She lived in the Lake District for many years and it’s where she found inspiration for her famous children’s books. Her former home, Hill Top Farm, is now a museum open to visitors.

Finally, if you are looking for breathtaking views then head to Scafell Pike, which at 978 metres (3208 Feet) above sea level gives you a wondrous play. The Lake District is one of the most picturesque places in England and it’s certainly a great place to visit if you love literature or simply want to enjoy some time outdoors.

This isn't a place to get drunk down these every day, but it is a place of beauty and wonder, it is the place that will sit in the back of your mind forevermore. I still remember my first trip to the lakes, we then proceed to take a quick trip to the Hadrians Wall, before briely Crossing the England/Scotland border.

If you need a place to gain inspiration from, The Lakes is where you go. If you need just some time to get away from the hustle and busy of life then the Lakes is where you go. It is a wonderous place which I honestly believe everyone should see once, and while some twenty-year-olds will roll their eyes at taking a trip just to walk and live in nature it makes you feel better and you will get some beautiful Instagram-able photos out of it.
