The Grand Canyon is a gigantic mass that stretches for almost 280 miles. It’s almost 20 miles wide, and more than six thousand feet deep.

Yes, it is one of the biggest and most magnificent piles of rocks on Earth. It boasts a rich history, spectacular nature, diverse wildlife, and a multitude of tourist activities. And this is precisely what makes it one of the most popular tourist attractions—the fact that it offers a little bit of something for everyone.

Nature-lovers will appreciate its beauty, serene views, and tranquil atmosphere, the curious ones will love the stories, and those who are a bit more adrenaline-packed will enjoy the range of activities.

In her book Downcanyon: A Naturalist Explores the Colorado River through the Grand CanyonAnn Zwinger said that the canyon hypnotizes her; makes her just sit, and watch until the dusk.

So what is it really about this World Wonder that attracts more than five million people every year?

Breathtaking nature

Whoever had the chance to pay a visit to The Grand Canyon will tell you that they haven’t managed to make one good photograph. And it’s not because there’s nothing to snap a photo of; but because no photo can do the view its justice. It is impossible even to grasp it in its entirety with a naked eye, and no panoramic photograph will manage either.

Most of its surface is made of earth, and the rocky structures will take you back through history through ancient times. The unspoiled nature gives you an up-close view of the Earth’s treasures you’ve never seen before.

Abundant wildlife

Some spots will make you feel like you’re at the very end of the world, all on your own. But if you take a closer look, you’ll notice that you’re surrounded with hundreds of species of birds, mammals, and reptiles who run around freely because—well, they own the place. Undisturbed by modern man, The Grand Canyon is their safe place; and if you look a bit deeper in the blue water that runs through, you’ll notice a few unique species of fishes, strolling carelessly down the river.

Fascinating history

The Grand Canyon is thought to be a home to many cultures, some which may have even been born right here. Some of the most notable historians and researchers claim that it dates before 1,200 BCE, which would mean that it may be even older than the Native American tribes. More than 4,800 archeological sites have been uncovered, and the artifacts discovered tell the tales of ancient Indian tribes, and their one-of-a-kind way of life.

The rocks feature imprints of each and every being that ever walked through the formation, or sought shelter in it. Some of them are found to be more than two billion years old, while the Colorado River has been carving The Canyon for at least six million years.

It serves as proof that some things only get better with age.

Limitless activities

While it can be your ‘escape from the city noise’, The Grand Canyon also offers a number of activities to cater to more adventurous spirits. You can either go biking on a few off-road trails, hike on some of its steeper slopes, or go river rafting, and get your heart racing—all great ways to explore the wonders of The Canyon’s nature.

Alternatively, you can hop on one of the Grand Canyon helicopter tours, and experience everything it has to offer from a bird’s-eye view. It is one of the best ways to understand just how massive it is, and to see absolutely everything it has to offer—Lake Mead, Bypass Bridge, the Hoover Dam, and native reservations.

Furthermore, even though The Grand Canyon is a great one-day trip activity, those who want to experience it by night can set up their tents any place they feel will offer the best views of the scenery, and the starry night.

Educational Opportunities

Considering everything listed above, the history, rich nature, junior ranger programs, and numerous education programs organized by the National Park, visitors can unveil mysteries that surround the Canyon. You’ll get to learn more about this specific region, but also get in touch with nature, and everything it has to offer.

One final tip—come back. Each season brings out The Canyon’s different face, each just as uniquely beautiful as any other. But no matter when you arrive, you can count on good weather to follow you on your exploration of this massive natural structure.
