When we first talk to our potential clients about their moving to Costa Rica, one of the first questions many of them ask is if there are other expats here from their home country and where do they live. They share with us that even though they are thinking deep and hard about moving here, if they do decide to do so, they want to have the opportunity to meet and to stay in touch with others who have something in common with them.

I always tell them that I couldn't agree more. In my opinion, I believe that it is so important to ease into a big life change like this, instead of cutting all ties with the life you once had and basically OVERRUN the landing strip so to speak. When one makes a commitment to move to another country, it is proven over the 20 years and hundreds of clients that we have assisted, that it does take time to "SETTLE IN". . to learn the "LAY OF THE LAND". What easier and more clear path it would be for you to meet new friends who have just gone through the transition of moving from one country to another themselves. They have, no doubt, made so many mistakes. And, learning what they did wrong, so YOU won't fall into these traps yourself, would be priceless!

With that said, you have to do your homework and research. Deep due diligence must be completed around every corner in which you turn. We all hate to admit it, but there are bad people down here, just like there are everywhere! The GOOD NEWS is that we've found that there are more honest, friendly, caring people who would love to help you, than there are dishonest, lowlife idiots who are looking to cause havoc in your life!

I do have some more good news for those of you who are thinking about or are actually planning their move here. There are so many clubs, groups and associations who cater to the expat who lives in Costa Rica. Off the top of my head, I would suggest starting on Facebook. There are so many established Facebook groups who have dozens, hundreds and many times, thousands of 'members' who are very active on the site. If you have a question, simply post it and you'll no doubt, get dozens of replies within a few hours. I also would like to point out that these groups are very defined in their target audience. For example, if you are moving to Atenas, there is a group that has members who are expats living in Atenas. If you love to birdwatch in the Arenal area of the country, there is a group that has members who are expats who love to birdwatch in that area of the country. These groups are so defined. . by political parties, by specific location, by interests. . any specific group of expats who you want to meet can be found within the Facebook community.

You can also contact the U.S. Embassy in San Jose. They have pages of information and dozens of links that will provide information about where certain groups of people live. They also can direct you to other organizations that will point you in the right direction, no matter what you are looking for!

Another way to find certain groups of people of interest is to start reading some of the online news publications. Here's a short list for you to explore:

http://www.ticotimes.net

http://www.qcostarica.com

http://www.thecostaricanews.com

http://www.news.co.cr

And here's a couple of links to the US Embassy website:

https://cr.usembassy.gov/news-events/

https://cr.usembassy.gov/education-culture/

This is only a sample of what is available to you online. I can pretty much guarantee that if you spend a couple of hours on the internet, you will not only have most all of your initial questions answered for you, but you'll find dozens of links that will help you locate other groups of expats who will make your life so much easier when you finally arrive!

Think of moving to Costa Rica as one of the best adventures of your life. There are so many ways to go. . so many forks in the road. But the GOOD NEWS is that no matter what path you choose, you'll still be in one of the happiest countries on the planet. Even if you get lost here, that only opens you up to new experiences!

Keep an open mind, work hard at getting to know every inch of Costa Rica and all it has to offer. It will reward you 100 fold!

One last thought. . one of the questions most asked also is, "do I need to learn Spanish?". The short answer is, "No, you don't"! You will get along just fine without it. But, do yourself a favor. . learn Spanish. Start slow and set a goal of being somewhat fluent in a year's time. You will adapt so much quicker, enjoy yourself here so much more and you'll have the benefit of making new friends who only speak the native language! You will DOUBLE your friendship circle! With free apps for your phone, like, "Duolingo", there is no excuse not to learn Spanish. It's not that hard and you will be so proud of yourself!
