The Wandering Rose
The room spun around me while I simultaneously froze. In one moment I could feel the sensations of the rose flowing up my spine and into my mind's eye. It bloomed; and the books’ invisible words arranged itself onto the petals, and from its petals dripped into my heart the gold codes that moments before were indinguishabled to my physical eyes. I was floating in the liminal state of the divine, beyond any space and time. Suddenly then, I understood why.

The room was dark and grungy, the slightest bit of sunlight shone through the small windows, revealing the dust floating around like a swarm of flies. I could barely breathe properly without inhaling the particles. “I feel like we should be wearing masks in this place” I coughed.

"SOLD! The 1923 halfpenny sold for $20 000 to number 93. Congratulations. Next up we have a 1916 mule halfpenny in…" "$20 000" she mouthed, as the crowds attention fixed on the next item. Her eyes remained on the small coin now being carried away, admitting to herself that she will miss that bit of copper. Yowie had been so proud of it, but this was a chance he would want her to take.

"I'm late", she muttered. The sky was already lightening up, and the first sun rays began hitting the dusty windows of her flat. She looked outside towards the railway station and its big antique clock, reminding her it was past 6 am and she was, indeed, very late.

She laid in bed after another tiring day, so similar to the previous four, yet full of its own unique trials. As she reflected on the past year, she bemoaned the contrast of her present realities to how she had envisioned what this year would hold. She pulled out a little black notebook from her nightstand. It was supposed to be a travel notebook. There were even tabs for budgeting and packing. Instead, it had become a collection of shattered hopes and dreams, and sketches of things she especially wanted to see but never would. Years ago, she had written on the front cover with silver marker, “I think I’m quite ready for another adventure.” Now she held it in her hands like an old love letter. “Another adventure,” she scoffed at herself. When was the last time she had had any adventures? Just once she wanted to get out and see the world. Just once she wanted to throw caution to the wind and not have to be sensible. There was a war within her. “You only get one life, live it.” “You need a safety net; you have a house and kids and responsibilities.” She could almost see the tiny figures hashing it out on her shoulders. But which voice had the tiny halo and which the horns and pitchfork? She couldn’t decide. “Oh well,” she thought, it wasn’t like what little she had in savings could pay for much of an adventure anyway.

Truthfully, I only existed in two places for the majority of my young life. The first was a company-owned 2006 Chevrolet Impala. It was an awful tan color, and had more miles on it than my manager’s net worth. I had put on seven or eight thousand of them in my short time as a sales representative. We were a company no one had heard of, selling blue-light glasses which I’m quite sure didn’t work.

James sat at the kitchen counter, looking over his bank statement and credit card debt. £8,137.94 in the red. How had it gotten so out of hand? He knew she took his card shopping, “you don’t mind do you?” she’d smile sweetly. Mind? She’d just given him the best morning of his life, who was he to mind?

It's crazy how her body felt so warm and so cool at the same time. This was her first time on the open sea, and she had never felt this sensation before. Above her, the beaming Caribbean sun heated her skin. From the bow of the small sailboat, the northern wind cooled her, almost to a chill. It reminded her of the hot peach cobbler and ice cream she loved to eat back home.

The transformation from desperation to dejection, and then to a somber acquiescence was, in a way, a relief. Pushing aside the piles of invoices, credit card statements, and scribbled calculations, I turned off the old desk lamp, and for a moment the entire universe seemed to dissolve into darkness. If only I could remain in that peaceful abyss forever....

When the tiger shark made direct eye contact with me, I stepped back automatically, drawing in a sharp breath. Giant rays, and fish in every colour glided around and over the aquarium’s plexiglass tunnel where I waited. Although I didn’t understand why Caroline said to be here in this spot, on this day, at this time, I was here and completely immersed in the experience. The bright sun filtered through from above, while the blue light and ocean soundtrack gave a sense of actually being on the ocean floor. It was mesmerizing.

St. Petersburgh has a history of more than 300 years so it is no wonder that through all these years and centuries some ghostly apparitions have been left behind.
