Tourism is back in Kenya and people come from all over the world to see nature at its best. I have traveled the country for 18 years and here are some the great places to visit. The country is stable, both politically and economically. Swahili is the national language with English spoken as well. It has a coastline and many national parks.
1. The Maasai Mara National Park
This place is the most famous in the country. The best time to visit is from July to October because at that time you can find millions of zebras and wildebeests. The local Maasai tribesmen offer tours and the place has an air strip, as well as a few five star hotels with campsites. The park was huge with families of elephants, lions, giraffes, and leopards. The best the thing about this place is that every June and July there are thousands of wildebeest that travel from Kenya to Tanzania and cross thousands of miles to look for green pasture. This great migration happens every year.
2. Lake Nakuru National Park
The lake here is famous for its Flamingos that enjoy the alkaline water of this shadow water lake. Home to millions of flamingos and other rare species of birds, there are private campsites and a few hotels in the place to say. Relatively close to Nairobi, it is also a three-hour drive away. Lately, the place is slowly growing after a huge population decline in 1990s. This lake is also known for its pink color because it is always covered with flamingos.
3. Mount Kenya National Park
Mt. Kenya is the second largest mountain in Africa. Home of UNESCO World Heritage site, traditionally this was the seat of Gikuyu God (Ngai). While naturally known for its trekking, as it is 5,199 meters above sea level and the second largest mountain in Africa, Mt. Kenya is a source of electricity and water for the country.
The mountain has some campsites and lodges for resting, and the local area has also organised for helicopter tours.
4. Amboseli National Park
Amboseli is located near the border of Tanzania. With a view of the Kilimanjaro, the Maasai tribe live near the plains for pasture, but it is also home to elephants, cheetah, lions, and many more. Four hours away from the capital city, it has a small air strip for travel.
5. Tsavo National Park
The is so big that it has a west part and an east part. In the west you can see elephants bathe with hippos. Crocodiles are also seen in the park and the famous "Big Five" stay in the park, but the park is so big that it takes time to notice all of them. The place has an air strip for travel and hotels for tourists.
6. Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park
Explorers say that there is another world under the ocean. Well, this Marine Park is situated in the shallow waters of the Indian Ocean, and it is just that. Traditional Dhows sail back and forth to travel tourists from Mombasa. Here and during this travel, you can enjoy snorkeling, dolphins, turtles, mantra rays, angelfish, and many more.
