Introduction

Do you dream of living in Europe but worry about the high living costs? Do you want to immerse yourself in new cultures, languages, and landscapes? Do you like to get off the beaten path? If so, Eastern Europe might be for you! With cities every bit as beautiful as their Western European neighbors that are steeped in history and close to some beautiful nature spots, there’s plenty to chose from.

We’ve picked three of the most popular cities for digital nomads to help you choose the perfect place for you. I hope you find this fun and learn a bit about yourself and what you’re looking for in a city to live in.

Quiz

Question 1: What would you like for dinner?

a. I want to fill up on pierogies! (Delicious dumplings, choose from lots of traditional fillings like potato and cheese, sauerkraut or spinach)

b. A big bowel of Hungarian Goulash! ( Peppery beef and tomato stew cooked with paprika. It’s usually served with fresh white bread)

c. Stuffed peppers or Byurek peppers (Stuffed peppers are filled with minced meat and rice and baked. Byrek peppers are filled with cheese and fried)

Question 2: Where could we find you on a Saturday night?

a. Taking shots in a local shot bar before joining a pub crawl.

b. In a cooler than cool ruin bar. These are hip, artsy, eclectic bars in abandoned buildings.

c. Watching some live music to warm up before hitting the clubs to dance until the early morning.

Question 3: Speaking of Saturday night, what are you drinking?

a. Vodka in lots of varieties and flavors.

b. Pálinka a fruit brandy, with flavors including apricot, pear, plum, and cherry.

c. A nice glass of wine from either a local winery or something homemade.

Question 4: Where could we find you on Sunday morning?

a. Soaking in the history of the city, visiting palaces, and museums.

b. Enjoying a relaxing outdoor thermal bath.

c. Getting cultured by visiting the national library and national theatre.

Question 5: What’s your kind of vibe?

a. College town vibes in a historical city.

b. Old school grandeur combined with a hip, young vibe.

c. A laid-back small-town vibe.

Question 6: Where would you like to do go for a weekend outside the city?

a. Visit UNESCO World Heritage-listed Auschwitz-Birkenau, a former Nazi concentration camp where more than a million European Jews and other prisoners were confined or killed during World War II.

b. I want to take a boat trip around Lake Balaton and stroll around the elegant and historic small town of Balatonfüred.

c. Give me a mountain to climb! Mount Musala, the highest peak in the country with stunning views of Rila National Park, is noted for its rich fauna and forests.

Mostly A you got KRAKOW, POLAND

There’s much to explore in Krakow. It’s filled with gothic churches, a wide variety of historic architecture, and Medieval plazas. In the evening, line your stomach with warm, cozy comfort food before trying out the fantastic variety of vodka! It’s one of the cheapest places in Europe and a great choice if you’re traveling on a shoestring.

Mostly B you got BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

In Budapest, you can enjoy a wild party scene by night followed by a relaxed spa trip by day. Ruin bars will be one of the coolest drinking experiences you’ll ever have! Nicknamed the City of Spas, Budapest is famous for its thermal baths dotted all over the city. And don’t forget the stunning architecture, rich history, and medieval castles to explore.

Mostly C you got SOFIA, BULGARIA

Sofia is a laid-back, modern, and youthful city with an abundance of parks and gardens. It is another gem of a city for architecture and history. You can marvel at the iconic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral(pictured, Banya Bashi Mosque or the National Theatre. For the outdoorsy types, hike up Vitosha Mountain for panoramic views of the city. In the evenings enjoy live music with good food and wine.

Conclusion

All three cities share some incredible historical sites and architecture! They also offer unique opportunities for great food and intriguing nightlife. I would honestly be happy to stay in all of them!

Of course, these aren’t the only options; there are so many stunning cities in Eastern Europe to travel to or live in. These are examples to think about what’s important to you in terms of activities, food, and nightlife, to name a few.
