Our AmAZing Road Trip

A road trip through Arizona and the poem that followed.

Written by an Arizonan.

We went on a road trip that was an incredible feat.

And I was the navigator in the passenger seat.

Because here in Arizona there are many sights that cannot be beat.

Take an adventure and you’re in for a treat.

But the question is: can you take the heat?

Driving on the highway where the earth turns red.

On 89A is the town of Sedona straight ahead.

An unmissable stop from what I have read.

A place where people go to rest and renew.

With magnificent green trees and a sky so blue.

A weekend in this town was long overdue.

Built in the rocks, the Chapel of the Holy Cross stands majestic and true.

Climb up Cathedral Rock to an unbeatable view.

Sit on the rocks which are a deep copper hue.

Or go to the top and yell “Wahoo!”

A Pink Jeep Tour is honestly great fun.

The Road of No Return was shrieks and screams for everyone.

That evening was incredible - we laughed a ton!

It was a picture-perfect day under the sun.

Antelope Canyon was the next stop on our map.

And let it be on yours, as many pictures you will snap.

We booked a jeep tour and met a nice chap.

Entering the tall sandstone walls, you walk through the gap.

If waves were turned to stone is my description, my recap.

And believe me at the end of the tour you will want to give quite the clap.

But before leaving this town we ate the best BBQ- and that’s a wrap.

If you want a photograph like no other- my advice I will lend:

Driving in Page you will come to a dirt lot, turn here I recommend.

Grab your mother, brother, sister, or friend,

And walk the trail until you’ve come to a dead-end.

Because here you’ve arrived at Horseshoe Bend.

Horseshoe Bend

Looking at the canyon and the river below, a wonderful time you will spend.

Standing on the edge may give you a rush, but not too far, or you might descend.

A canyon this incredible and vast is hard to comprehend.

As the scenery looks like a green screen and a little pretend.

But to see something so picturesque, was my inspiration for the poem I just penned.

This was all thanks to a road trip with my mother, my best friend.

And I can’t wait to continue this exciting weekend.

My mom and I.

One bright and early morning we went to a place far and remote.

To go somewhere which is only accessible by boat.

The brilliant blue water surrounds the canyon like a moat.

A mile on the trailhead is what you must devote.

To reach the next destination of which here I wrote:

Lake Powell

One of the largest natural bridges known to mankind,

Rainbow Bridge on Lake Powell is a true treasure find.

By water, rock, and wind it was incredibly designed.

The canyon walls surround you in front, on the side, and behind.

Standing 290 feet into the sky, looking in awe brings a peaceful state of mind.

However, this place is sacred so please do not be blind.

Respect the environment, its history, and be ever so kind.

Walking to Rainbow Bridge

Monument Valley of the American Southwest.

Is where Forrest Gump stopped running and finished his quest.

The Searchers, Stagecoach, and the Rio Grande,

Are wild west movies that have been filmed in this land.

The sandstone buttes that stand tall and look like a hand.

Are called the three mittens that I understand.

The hotel had a spectacular scene and I was impressed.

Because the view at sunset or sunrise was one of the best.

Forrest Gump Point, Utah
Monument Valley

A natural wonder that is utterly cool.

The only place in America where post is “Mailed by Mule”.

Coming here will make you feel as tiny as a molecule.

Here I welcome you to the Grand Canyon- Arizona’s crown jewel!

Come with me and I’ll be your guide.

Step up to the rim and you’ll go wide-eyed.

And walk the Trail of Time in stride.

Or journey to the bottom by mule ride.

Sit on the rocks at Hopi Point to watch the sunset, and great pictures it will provide.

Be careful and cautious as people have died.

But you won’t find another place worldwide!

You will stand there in awe and put your worries aside,

That give you this feeling like no other, 100% bona fide.

The best way to see the Grand Canyon is by mule.

Our trip is not yet finished and would not be complete.

Without a visit to America’s most famous street.

Route 66 is a step back in time where nostalgia is sweet.

Where the oldies music makes your heart skip a beat.

The bright neon lights are the first thing you greet.

And to take a stroll in the evening the mood is pleasant and upbeat!

Now Meteor Crater is a visit we did owe.

Where a long time ago on the Colorado Plateau,

A giant meteorite hit about 50,000 years ago.

And is one of the world’s best-preserved impact sites, which I did not know.

Stand on the rim and look down below.

There’s a giant hole in the ground that’ll make you say whoa!

Meteor Crater

On our way home, we drove through the town of Winslow.

A stop on Route 66 that people now forgo.

You might have heard of it from a song written a while ago,

“Take it Easy” by The Eagles is a classic on the radio.

Across from the giant red guitar, which you can pretend to play like a pro.

Is “Standin’ on the Corner Park” which makes for a great photo,

Where we stood with the flatbed Ford before we had to go.

Winslow, Arizona

So that was the road trip of Katie and Kate.

One of my favorite family vacations to date.

A total of 1,000 miles on highways, back roads, and the interstate.

Because to be a tourist in your own state,

Our history and land I did appreciate.

So, take my advice a visit to Arizona is terrific and great,

But please remember to wear sunscreen and hydrate!
