More Than a Grocery Store
Why I Love Working at Uproot Market & Eatery

Disclosure: I am an employee at Uproot Market & Eatery. This article reflects my own experiences and opinions about the place I work and why I genuinely enjoy being part of the team.
When people ask me where I work, I don't simply say, "a grocery store." I tell them I work somewhere that's different—a place where healthy living, local agriculture, sustainability, and community all come together under one roof. Uproot Market & Eatery isn't just a place to shop... It's a place where people gather, learn, discover new foods, support local businesses, and become part of something bigger than themselves.

One of the things that makes Uproot unique is that it operates as a member-owned cooperative. Instead of being owned by a large corporation, the co-op belongs to its members and is guided by an elected Board of Directors. Anyone can become a lifetime member by making a one-time investment of $200, which can be paid all at once or in affordable installments of $20 per month for ten months.
Membership comes with some wonderful benefits. Once fully invested, members receive two 10% off shopping days each month that they can use whenever they choose, 20% off case orders, the ability to special order products that our vendors carry even if they aren't regularly stocked in the store, and the opportunity to vote in board elections or even run for a seat on the Board of Directors themselves. It truly gives customers a voice in helping shape the future of the co-op.
Of course, you don't have to be a member to enjoy everything Uproot has to offer.

One of my favorite things about working here is seeing the incredible variety of products available every day. Whether you're looking for natural health and wellness supplements, environmentally friendly cleaning supplies, organic groceries, specialty foods, or locally produced products from Michigan businesses, there's always something new to discover.
We also carry A2 milk, which many customers specifically seek out. Unlike conventional milk that contains both A1 and A2 beta-casein proteins, A2 milk comes from cows that naturally produce only the A2 protein. Some people who experience digestive discomfort with regular milk find that A2 milk is gentler on their stomachs, making it an appealing option for those looking for an alternative before giving up dairy altogether.
Supporting local vendors is another cornerstone of what makes Uproot special. Whenever possible, the co-op works with Michigan farmers and producers, helping strengthen our local economy while providing customers with fresh, high-quality products. From locally grown produce to artisan foods and handcrafted goods, shopping here means supporting your neighbors as much as stocking your own pantry.

The Eatery is another reason so many people return again and again. Whether you're grabbing lunch on a busy workday or looking for a quick breakfast before heading to work, there's always something delicious available. The grab-and-go cooler is stocked with freshly prepared meals and snacks, and if you'd rather enjoy your meal in the café, we're happy to heat it up for you so you can sit and relax at one of our tables.
Our kitchen also serves hot soup, a hot breakfast Monday through Saturday—including the customer favorite, Frittata Friday—and a Hot Bar available Monday through Friday with freshly prepared meals that make healthy eating both convenient and satisfying.

One thing visitors often notice right away is how welcoming everyone is. That isn't an accident. The people who work here genuinely care—not only about the products we sell, but about the people who walk through our doors.
Working at Uproot feels less like working with coworkers and more like being part of an extended family. We help one another, celebrate each other's successes, lend a hand when someone needs it, and truly care about serving our community. Every day, our team shares a common goal: helping people make healthier choices while making nutritious, locally sourced foods more accessible whenever possible.
Whether someone is searching for a specific supplement, trying to understand the difference between organic products, looking for environmentally friendly household cleaners, or simply wanting to eat healthier, everyone on our team is happy to help point them in the right direction. There is never any pressure—just people who enjoy sharing knowledge and helping customers find what works best for their lifestyles.
If you've never visited Uproot Market & Eatery, I encourage you to stop in and explore. You don't need to be a member to experience everything the co-op offers, and you'll quickly discover that it's much more than a grocery store. It's a place built around community, wellness, local partnerships, and people who genuinely care.
Whether you're shopping for fresh produce, discovering products made right here in Michigan, enjoying a hot breakfast or lunch, stocking your pantry with healthier options, or considering becoming a member-owner yourself, you'll find a welcoming atmosphere that's increasingly rare in today's fast-paced retail world.

Uproot Market & Eatery is open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. We are located at 119 West Michigan Avenue in downtown Battle Creek.
I'm proud to work here—not because it's perfect, but because every day I see people who truly believe in serving their community. In a world where so many businesses focus only on the bottom line, it's refreshing to be part of a place that puts people, health, local agriculture, and community first. That's what makes Uproot special, and it's why I enjoy coming to work each day.
