Although China is one of the safest travel destinations in the world, first-timers visiting the country might find certain aspects of navigating the country challenging. In spite of the efficient public transport networks and the strict rule of law prevailing across mainland China, unsavoury incidents are known to happen. From following cultural norms to minding one's belongings, here are some simple strategies to help make a getaway in China a safe and wholesome experience.

Confrontation Avoidance

While this may be more of a local custom, avoiding confrontation can take you a long way in avoiding conflict. The Chinese populace is known to have a distaste for confrontational conversations and actions so keeping one's cool is crucial. If there is something to complain about, do so in a polite manner and refrain from speaking in loud or rude tones to locals as this may just aggravate the situation. Similarly, do not get involved in conflicts among locals or other foreigners. The tonal quality of the Chinese language may also make certain loud conversations appear confrontational to the unaccustomed ear but it is best to ignore such instances as it's simply a manner of speaking.

Follow the Rules

It is essential to adhere to local laws on every conceivable matter, as China imposes heavy penalties and punishments on foreigners caught committing crimes. Offences such as using or selling illegal drugs carry the harshest sentences, and often, the unwitting foreigner may not even be aware that narcotics were stored in their bag by those involved in the drug trade. This is why it is important to mind your belongings in public places, especially at airports.

Use the Hotel Room Safe

Whether one is based at the Somerset Heping Shenyang or any of the other serviced apartments in Shenyang or elsewhere in China, most guest quarters will encompass a safe. This is where valuable documents such as travel documents, copies of passports and extra cash should be kept as carrying these items around is not always safe. Don't forget to keep the hotel's contact information written down and on hand in case of an emergency.

Only Use Legal Taxi Cabs

While it may surprise some visitors, not all taxis in China are metered or even legal. This is particularly true of the drivers that approach tourists outside Chinese airports. Apart from overcharging tourists, these swindlers may also take a longer route to reach the hotel or make pit stops at stores where they earn a commission. Use only licensed taxi drivers at all times and never get inside an unmetered vehicle without coming to an agreement on the cost of the journey.

Be Mindful of Scams

Just like in most travel destinations, there is a cross-section of Chinese society that's invested in duping tourists for cash rewards. One of the most well-known scams that take place in major Chinese cities involves teens befriending tourists and luring them into expensive bars and leaving the foreigner to foot the bill. Avoid invitations from strangers as a rule as these scammers are easily discouraged by a blunt refusal. It is also common for scammers to replace authentic banknotes with fake ones and insist that tourists handed them counterfeit cash.

Public Restrooms

Travellers must also be aware that most public restrooms in China do not feature commodes. Instead, there are "squat" style toilets, which may take some getting used to. Toiler paper and paper towels are also not provided so it may be prudent to bring your own.

Ask for Assistance

Locals are friendly and courteous in China and there's no reason not to reach out for help when in need of assistance or information. Most locals, especially those in uniform, can be helpful when it comes to getting directions or other practical insights into the opening times of attractions etc.
