How to Travel in Sri Lanka with Kids
A perfect family getaway
The South Asian destination, Sri Lanka, offers a diverse range of family-friendly attractions. From national parks and museums to beaches and art galleries, the island has everything travellers expect on a family vacation. Also known as the Peral of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is popular for beach vacations. Travelling here with kids can be fun, but you need to plan and think about every detail of your vacation.
1. A tropical paradise
Sri Lanka experiences a tropical climate and has a high temperature level. The weather remains hot throughout the year; however, there are two distinct seasons: the wet season and the dry season. The dry season ranges from December to March, and the wet season runs from May to September. The best time for tourist visits is usually the dry season, but the hotel rates are higher. The wet season can be fun too, but not ideal for families travelling with kids.
2. Family-friendly accommodation
Family hotels in Sri Lanka are aplenty. There's a wide range for you to choose from, and if you start your search a little early, you might be able to find good hotel deals. Sri Lanka has a lot of budget hostels and guesthouses, but they are not ideal for kids. To give your kids the best travel experience, you need to make sure that your kids have a comfortable place to return to. Finding suitable lodgings for your family is no challenge, not when you have the likes of Earl's Regency Kandy.
3. Keep your kids engaged
You need to make sure that your kids have as much fun as you do. Also, if you are to enjoy your vacation, your kids need to be occupied with something. Do a bit of research and find out the family attractions in Sri Lanka and make a list of activities you can enjoy with your kids. This shouldn’t be difficult as Sri Lanka has loads of family attractions.
4. Come up with a budget
Whatever the destination, travelling with kids is expensive. They have different needs, and as a parent, you need to make sure that they are met. However, not everyone has the ability to spend as much as they would like, so come up with a budget and try to stick to it.
5. Think about transportation
Sri Lanka’s transport system is alright, but nothing more can be said about it. Buses are highly unreliable and not great for families with kids. Trains can provide you with exciting experiences, but these can also be exhausting for kids. The best option for a family with kids is to hire a taxi or rent a car.
6. Think about food
You, as an adult, might be able to survive on street food, but your kids can’t do that, and you shouldn’t allow them to do that. Street food is an excellent addition to any trip, but you cannot vouch for cleanliness. Kids can easily fall sick, so stick to hotel food. If you’d rather make your own food, you can rent a holiday apartment that has cooking facilities.
7. National Museum
This is one of the family attractions in Colombo. The National Museum of Sri Lanka has an impressive collection of artefacts that speak of Sri Lanka’s colonial past. The collection includes coins, jewellery, garments, and various other historical items.
8. National Parks
Sri Lanka is home to several national parks. Each park offers exciting wildlife encounters. Your kids will love the opportunity to sight the rarest forms of wildlife.
9. Beaches
Your trip is incomplete until you visit Sri Lanka’s beaches. Kids and adults alike can enjoy Sri Lanka’s coastline. Kids can enjoy some beach sports while you relax on the soft beach sand.
