Tipped to be one of China's best-kept secrets, a trip to Shenzhen is accessible not only to those who are exploring the mainland but for travellers based in nearby Hong Kong as well. Lined with exciting attractions and activity bases, Shenzhen is the perfect getaway destination for couples, families and budget travellers. Here are some tips on how to spend six glorious days discovering the wonders of Shenzhen.

1. Day One

Your first day in Shenzhen should be dedicated to uncovering all the splendid theme parks occupying the city. Ideally situated in an area known as the "Overseas Chinese Town," the sheer size and scale of the theme parks are impressive, to say the least. The theme parks are so varied that it would take days to explore each in full but those with only a few days to discover Shenzhen can spend a few hours at each venue. Don't forget to enjoy the thrilling rides and other highlights occupying the landscapes of these large amusement parks of which Shenzhen – Window of the World is perhaps the finest. Other theme parks worthy of note include China Folk Cultural Village Shenzhen and the "Splendid China" Shenzhen which offers visitors a glimpse of iconic Chinese landmarks in an all-encompassing park. Happy Valley: Shenzhen is another option for the young at heart looking for a great way to spend a day in the area.

2. Day Two

After the thrills and spills of a day spent riding high on the amusements available in the city's best theme parks, travellers can devote their second day in Shenzhen to relaxation. There's no better way to unwind and immerse oneself in a relaxing atmosphere than by signing up for a spa day at one of the city's top healing centres. Spa treatments are also highly affordable in the area so one need only select a local spa and pick a massage or therapy session to make the most of it. Those who feel like a bit of shopping after a spa day can head to the Shek-O area which is lined with malls and department stores while Dongmen and the area near Futian Kou An are also must-shop hotspots.

3. Day Three

The third day in Shenzhen should ideally be spent visiting the many cultural landmarks and religious hubs around the city as exploring these venues is crucial to the understanding of local customs, history and beliefs. The Hongfa Temple is perhaps the best known religious institution in Shenzhen and paying homage to the icons at this scenic temple is a must while popping over to the Fairy Lake Botanical Gardens Shenzhen or the Shenzhen Garden and Flower Expo Park: Yuan are great ways to spend a few hours in nature. The illustrious Shenzhen Museum is another captivating attraction with educational exhibits from the past.

4. Day Four

The fourth day in Shenzhen is the perfect time to give the theme parks located on the other side of town a go. The Overseas Chinese Town East Shenzhen is the biggest highlight in the area and the venue is not only home to manmade waterfalls and other spectacular sights but is also known for hosting acrobatic showcases. It is possible to spend several days and still not discover all the park has to offer so a full-day at Overseas Chinese Town East Shenzhen is essential.

5. Day Five

The day before your last day in the city is the best time to explore the Dapeng Fortress which is located within an ancient village. Walking the paths of this old village is an enchanting experience tourist should not miss out on while a trip to Minsk World, the area's insane military theme park is another great way to spend an afternoon. Housed in a former Russian aircraft, the military museum is a big hit with families. Those based at Ascott Maillen Shenzhen and other similar Shenzhen accommodation hubs in the area will have easy access to the museum.

6. Day Six

Before heading to the airport or the ferry, take the time to pay a visit to Shenzhen Ocean World and Shenzhen Safari Park where one can enjoy a wild adventure before departing from the dynamic city.
