How to Spend a Day in Oman
A Comprehensive Guide
Oman isn’t often cited as a popular travel destination. However, the country has much to offer. Its friendly people, food, and culture are a few reasons why a tourist should visit this Gulf nation. You cannot explore everything Oman has to offer during the course of a day. But if that’s all you have, with a bit of planning, you can make the most of it.
Where to Stay and Where to Eat
Oman has plenty of accommodation options. While it might not be possible to find a budget option, if you do a bit of research, you can find one that suits your budget. Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara is an example of Omani accommodation. As for dining, there are many Oman restaurants.
Wadi Shab
One of the best attractions offered by Oman, Wadi Shab is an hour drive from Muscat, Oman’s capital. With many water pools, the place makes a great spot that is just ideal for relaxing with your loved ones. Among other features are a waterfall and a cave. You can get here via highway by taxi, and the hike is just a 2-minute boat ride away.
Oman Desert
Part of the Empty Quarter, the Oman Desert is a must-visit on any Oman tour. Camping here is extremely popular with locals as well as tourists. You can get here by jeep – be sure to make a stop at one of the local shops to get the tires deflated a little. You also need plenty of water to keep yourself refreshed and hydrated. Apart from camping, you can experience camel rides and sample delicious Bedouin-style dishes. Stargazing is another thing you simply must do here.
The Sultan Qaboos Mosque
It would be fair to say that this is the most important religious site in all of Oman. Located in Muscat, the Sultan Qaboos Mosque was opened in 2001. Its Islamic architecture is the most eye-catching feature of the site. When visiting the mosque, modest clothing is advised; females are required to cover their hair with a scarf. There is no admission fee, and the site is open to tourists every day except Friday.
Nizwa Fort
Another gorgeous site in Oman, Nizwa Fort is a must-visit on your one-day tour. This is one of the oldest castles in the country with a long and colourful history. Spending an hour here is worthwhile – even better if you can make it two hours. The fort offers excellent views over the palm tree-filled oasis.
Misfat Al Abriyeen
This is where you can experience what it is like to be Omani. Misfat Al Abriyeen is a traditional village that offers homestays. The village is bordered by a mountainous landscape. All the houses have roof terraces meant for sightseeing and gardening. Although this is a traditional Omani village, tourists are offered all the comforts they need.
Jabal Akhdar Mountains
Offering breathtaking views and hiking opportunities, Jabal Akhdar Mountains attract tourists and locals who want a little adventure. Getting here can only be done by a 4x4 jeep. Navigation is easy as all the alleyways have names. There are many steep slopes in the region, so if you don’t have a lot of driving experience, it isn’t a good idea to drive here by yourself.
Bimmah Sinkhole
Located right next to Wadi Shab, Bimmah Sinkhole is one of the natural pools found in Oman. It is said that the pool was created by a huge meteor. The crystal blue water is a welcoming sight in the Omani heat. After viewing the sinkhole from the top, you can get down into the sinkhole using the long staircase.
