If you’re planning a trip to Qatar, there are a few cities that you must visit, one being its capital city of Doha, and among the others is the city of Al Wakra. Al Wakra is thought of as a great city in which to enjoy an idyllic holiday. From quaint shopping and dining spots to a scenic harbour and a beach that’s perfect for lounging on, this city offers a great respite from the usual hustle and bustle of city life in Qatar.

An Intro to the City

Located around a 25-minute drive away from Qatar’s capital city of Doha, the scenic city of Al Wakrah makes for a perfect getaway from the busy city-life vibe that you’ll get from Doha. Being the capital city, some of the best hotels in Qatar are located in Doha. However, since Al Wakrah is quite a popular city for getaways, there are plenty of good hotels there as well, with many being part of international hospitality brands such as the Souq Al Wakra Hotel Qatar by Tivoli hotel among others. Originally, the city of Al Wakrah started out as a fishing village, as well as one that was known for harvesting pearls from the sea. Qatar was once famed for its pearls and its economy relied heavily on this industry, and at the centre of this industry was Al Wakrah. The pearl harvesting trade really thrived there.

Throughout the years, Al Wakrah has continued to progress rapidly, and as a result, has transformed into a well-established city. Al Wakrah has done quite well for itself, and today, it is classified as the second biggest city in the whole of Qatar.

Hit the Beach

One of the main attractions of the city is the beach since one side of the city borders the Persian Gulf. If you’re travelling with the family, this is a great place to visit. Not only because a fun day at the beach is always a hit but because the beach at Al Wakrah offers plenty of other activities that you can enjoy. One being a beachside barbeque, and others being a good old game of volleyball and football - the beach offers courts that you can use for both games.

If you have time to spare, make sure to take some time out to enjoy a stroll along the beaches. There are points where you can see the stunning juxtaposition of sand dunes meeting the blue waves of the Persian Gulf - a truly awe-inspiring sight to behold.

Head to the Harbour

The port area is considered to be the most beautiful part of the city. Make your way over the port of Al Wakrah to enjoy views of the water. And if you’re feeling adventurous, hire a fishing boat and head out to the sea for a fun day of fishing. Since olden times, Al Wakrah has long been held in high esteem for the important role it has played in the country’s fishing industry over the years.

Old-school Shopping

Souq Al Wakrah offers quite a different shopping experience than the traditional mega-malls that are so commonplace nowadays. If you’re looking for a modernistic shopping experience, you won’t find it here. However, if you’re looking to forget the time and spend an afternoon weaving your way in and out of traditional stores selling all and sundry, then you’re in the right place. Looking for a place to purchase authentic Omani products that are handmade and one-of-a-kind? You’ll find all that and more at Souq Al Wakrah. The souq also has many quaint cafés, which are perfect for relaxing in when you need a quick break from all the shopping.
