Sri Lanka is indeed an amazing destination with a lot of interesting cities, and Kandy is among the most preferred ones of all. Yes, it's a compact city with relatively narrow roads, but you find several places of interest here in Kandy that are worth visiting. If you are not driving your car, you can use either the public transportation network (buses) or tuk-tuks to travel around the city or you can even try walking these distances if you wish to.

Arriving in Kandy

If you think of allocating one whole day to explore everything that the city of Kandy has got, the best thing is to arrive in Kandy the day before. Any city in Sri Lanka (be it Colombo, Negombo, Galle, Anuradhapura, or Jaffna) has direct busses to Kandy, and if you wish to have a better experience, you can try out a train ride as well. Coming by a private car will be the easiest option (although more expensive) and expect to face some traffic jams in the city of Kandy if you are going drive all the way.

Staying in Kandy

The reason why you need to look for a good hotel to stay in Kandy before your Kandy exploration the next day is so that your body can enjoy a good relaxation. If your budget allows, choose to spend your night at the best hotel in Kandy while enjoying the best comforts and luxury. Options the likes of hotel Topaz are available for your stay and it is normally best to have breakfast the next day from the hotel and then leave for your exploration. You will love the picturesqueness of these hotels more than anything and will also fall in love with the authenticity in their hospitality as well.

Visit the main attraction first

Needless to say, the most famous attraction in the city of Kandy is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa). This is one of the most sacred sites for Buddhists all over the world because this temple houses one of the sacred Tooth Relics of the Lord Buddha. Thousands of visitors (both Buddhists and non-Buddhists) come to visit this temple daily and if you reach here in the morning, you'll be able to avoid the crowds as well. Make sure you wear something decent (covering your shoulders and knees) when going to the temple, and join the crowds offering flowers (mostly lotuses and temple flowers) to Lord Buddha and this will surely grant you an inexpressible spiritual bliss. Visit the Buddhist Museum too which is located on the same premises, and do not forget to take a souvenir to remember Kandy on your way to the hotel again for lunch.

Visit the other attractions as time permits

Kandy is not just about one attraction. This ancient city has many other significant attractions too, and you may visit all or at least some of them depending on the time restrictions. Head to the Peradeniya Botanical Garden, which is the largest garden in Sri Lanka for a short while to admire the beauty of more than 4000 plant species. You may also go to the Udawatte Kele Sanctuary (located very close to the Temple of Sacred Tooth Relic) if you want to have some more time close to Nature. Find some time to make a quick visit to the Kandy Central Market for a traditional shopping experience and then the Kandy City Center (KCC) to have a modern, luxury shopping experience. KCC also provides some great dining and entertainment options, and you may also try them if you have time before leaving the city.
