As the last task to accomplish before heading to the airport to board a flight bound for paradise, packing for a Maldivian getaway may seem simple from the outset. As a popular beach holiday hub that's a haven for honeymooners and families, most holidaymakers forget the country's religious identity and the allowances that must be made for local sensitivities. Here are some tips to help tourists pack everything they need for a vacation in the archipelago.

Attire

Depending on the duration of the stay, tourists heading to the Maldives should pack at least a few casual clothing combinations for the trip. Shorts, sundresses and t-shirts are perfectly acceptable as long as they are made from cotton or other fabrics that do not absorb the heat and humidity. Resort wear is also a must for those who intend to spend most of their time lounging by the poolside at the Hard Rock Hotel Maldives or taking part in various resort activities in Maldives. Keep in mind that swimwear and casual wear need not be overly conservative as long as they are strictly worn in the confines of the hotel base. Travellers will need more covered up (knees and shoulders, in particular) clothing options for sightseeing tours in Male, however.

Footwear

Although a pair of sturdy flip-flops will more than suffice for even a week-long getaway in the archipelago, visitors must also pack an additional pair of sandals and sneakers for various excursions outside of the resort hub. Do not bring new and unworn pairs of sandals or shoes on holiday as the heat and high temperatures of the beach paradise can cause chafing and other irritating side effects of breaking in a new pair.

Toiletries

Although most hotels will provide everyday toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and shampoo, packing your own supplies is necessary for those who intend to spend more than a weekend in the Maldives. Apart from the above-mentioned items, personal hygiene items must also be carefully packed in a waterproof pouch that's ideally transparent. Suntan lotion should also be on hand during a beach vacation regardless of the destination and it is crucial to get the SPF index right as well. While it is possible to purchase some of these items in the Maldives, tourists should be aware that due to high taxation even simple needs such as soap, shampoo and suntan lotion will be more expensive in the Maldives.

Other Accessories

From iPads and laptops loaded with your favourite holiday films to a trusty eReader, we all need devices to keep us entertained while we are away. Don't forget to bring the right chargers and adapters for each of the devices as it can prove difficult to find such items in local stores for a reasonable price. A digital camera with underwater photo and video capturing abilities will also come in handy when spending time in the pristine waters of the country while those who intend to go scuba diving or snorkelling may find it easier to take their own personal snorkels and fins.

Medical Needs

Tourists that are taking any medication for chronic conditions should make sure that they have enough supplies for the duration of the holiday. Taking the prescription along is also a good idea in case the medicines are damaged in transit or due to any other unforeseen circumstances. Apart from specific medical supplies, tourists should also carry some basic items such as Band-Aids, antacids, antihistamines and over-the-counter painkillers.

Documentation

All documentation including your travel itinerary, copies of the airline ticket and passport, traveller's cheques, if any, should be securely packed in a water-proof file and packed separately from the rest of your belongings, especially liquids.
