As one of the world's top honeymoon destinations, the Maldives is a dream come true for beach lovers the world over. Home to some of the finest beaches on the planet, this low-altitude paradise offers tourists a pristine environment in which to enjoy a wide variety of water sports and sailing adventures. Whether you are heading to the archipelago for a weekend away or a lengthy vacation full of water-bound activities, here's what every holidaymaker should have in their suitcase.

Beachwear

As you will be spending the vast majority of your time splashing around in the ocean or the pool, it is best to pack at least two bathing suits for the trip. While it is possible to purchase swimwear in the Maldives, finding bikinis and one-piece options can prove difficult for those who do not fit standard sizes. Swimwear is also quite costly in the Maldives so it is wiser to purchase these items before your departure and also pack a cover-up shawl or dress for spending time by the pool. Although the Maldives is a Muslim country, there are no restrictions in terms of swimwear styles that are acceptable but one must be conscious to cover up with a sarong or breezy kaftans when heading indoors or occupying public areas of the hotel.

Other Clothing Needs

Pack at least a few casual tops, shorts and skirts for your trip to the Maldives as these can be worn on sightseeing excursions and when embarking on other tours such as whale watching safaris and sunset cruises. Take at least one conservative outfit that covers both the knees and the shoulders to wear during your day trip to Male where visiting heritage sites such as the Grand Friday Mosque and the presidential palaces will require more modest attire. Honeymooners who intend to wine and dine in high-end restaurants may also want to pack a formal dress, heels and the works but that's only if you're likely to dress up on holiday. A pair of flip flops and a pair of sandals is all that's needed in terms of footwear.

Beach Accessories

Sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat must also be securely packed to keep the heat from one's eyes during outings. Don't forget to purchase a sun block with an SPF index above 30 as it will make a big difference to your skin after a few days in the sun. Sunburn is very common among tourists hailing from colder climates so lather up and make sure you have additional sunscreen packed in your day bag. Those who intend to go snorkelling or diving should make sure their sunscreen is reef- safe as some chemicals used in sunscreen are harmful to corals and marine species.

Toiletries

Although Maldives resort rooms and suites at venues such as the Hard Rock Hotel Maldives will contain single-serving soap, shampoo and conditioner containers, it is best to bring essential toiletries in a spill-proof bag. Those who are using specific skin creams, moisturisers, mosquito repellents and body washes will want to buy travel size containers of their favourite brands for the trip.

Mini First-Aid Kit

It is difficult to predict when one may encounter accidents, health issues and other scrapes and bruises during a holiday so it is best to be prepared. As pharmacies are not found on most resort islands, it is crucial to have a few Band-Aids, allergy pills, antihistamines and antacids in your luggage. Those who are taking medication for chronic conditions should also bring enough for the duration of the stay and keep the prescription on hand during security checks and if supplies run out due to unforeseen circumstances.
