Sri Lanka has been recognised by various international sources as one of the perfect wildlife destinations in the world. Nature lovers and wildlife explorers frequently travel to this amazing destination and one of the most preferred areas during their tour is Yala. Located in the southeastern parts of Sri Lanka, Yala National Park is the main attraction here, while there are also some ancient pilgrimage sites to be explored. Know these facts before you go, and make your vacation adventures even more delightful.

Take a guided safari to make your experience more meaningful

Needless to say, Yala National Park is the most popular National Park in Sri Lanka among the locals as well as foreign travelers. It has become this popular due to the large density of Sri Lankan leopards in it. Yala is the second largest National Park in the country, only being second to the Wilpattu National Park. So, during your holiday in Yala, make sure you take a guided safari observing and exploring the rare wildlife sceneries. In this park, three out of the big four in Sri Lanka can be spotted and that includes the leopard, elephant, and sloth bear.

Go fishing with local fishermen to have an authentic experience

You may have engaged in fishing previously, but the traditional fishing experience in Yala will surely delight you. You just need to hop on board a traditional fishing boat and enjoy the ride. To help you and guide you, you will have a bunch of local fishermen and although their English is not so precise, they'll still be able to do the needful for you. You'll be guided to a tank nearby and then will be taught the art of catching fish in the true local style. You are sure to be happy about the experience afterward, and especially about the fact that you lent a helping hand to the local community the way you can.

Say yes to bird watching in a neighbouring National Park

If you are someone who loves birding, here's the perfect opportunity for you. The Bundala National Park is located in close vicinity and it's one of the ideal places where you can watch birds in their natural habitat. You can see a lot of endemic bird species, while also spotting some migratory birds here and there. Flamingoes, storks, and herons can be seen here and are sure to delight your adventures; and if you are a wildlife photographer, you'll fall in more love with this National Park.

Visit the local villages and get to know the villagers

One of the most interesting things to do while you holiday in Yala is to explore the villages nearby. The villagers you find during your explorations do not live sophisticated lives, but will still be polite and friendly to invite you to their houses to enjoy a cup of tea. All you've got to do is to take a cycle (of course you can walk too, but cycling is more fun!) and head to the rural villages through bushes and trees. Do not forget to take some toffees or chocolates with you because that's how you can make the innocent local kids happy during your tour. If you want to explore more, let the locals show you directions to Sithulpawwa monastery and Magul Maha Viharaya which are both ancient Buddhist sites.

Where to stay in Yala?

To spend your holiday amidst all comforts there are many great Yala luxury hotels the likes of Uga Chena Huts. While offering you a truly authentic experience, they will make your vacation much more awesome and blissful.
