Looking for a way to enhance your space in your apartment living room? This guide is for you. Living in an apartment is beneficial in a lot of ways, but the lack of space can make things difficult. But don’t worry, if there’s no way you can change apartments and find one with a bigger living room, there are ways to make a living room look bigger – it’s all about taking the time to be creative and thinking out of the box.

Choose simple colours

A lot of people make the mistake of choosing the wrong colour palette or choosing colours that don’t work together. This is a mistake if you have smaller rooms in your apartment. A lot of different colours in one living space can make it look busy and cluttered. This does not mean, however, that you can’t add colour to your living room. You can, but make sure you choose a simple colour palette. Most luxury apartments in Sri Lanka, for example, are decorated with simple colours to cater for tasteful preferences; Cinnamon Life Apartments can be taken as an example of this idea.

Use colour wisely

You already know that you can use colour but need to be wise about it. What this means is that you need to use colours that create an uplifting atmosphere. Coral, for example, is an excellent colour choice. You can use white on your shutters and the skirting. If you have drapes, let the light come in. Also, instead of choosing dark woodwork, go for a lighter colour; rustic furniture would work well as well.

Textures

A minimalistic approach might work well if you like that kind of style, but the issue is that it can create a grim and sterile atmosphere. This will have the opposite effect. So, choose beautiful textures that will add character to the living room without taking up a lot of visual space. Grained woodwork, velvet cushions, sheepskin rugs, and leather armchairs are a few ideas that you should consider.

Include mirrors

It’s a known fact that mirrors can make a room look bigger, so add a mirror or two to your living room décor. And you should get the placement right. Mirrored alcoves, for example, reflect light back into the room. You need to choose a bigger mirror if you want to achieve the desired space-enhancing effect.

Layer lighting

Laying your lighting is one of the best ways to make a small space look bigger. Your living room may have lots of natural light in the daytime, but to make the room looks spacious and cosy at night, you should have pendent lighting with dimmable control, wall lights, and lamp lighting.

Lamp lighting is great for tasks like reading, and wall lighting can create a cosy atmosphere and make the space look bigger if directed in opposite directions.

Refined furniture

To make your apartment living room look bigger, you should get rid of any pieces of heavy furniture. They can take up a lot of visual space, and if they are dark, they also drain light. Light pieces of furniture with tapered legs are a great idea for a small living room. Furniture with show legs can make any room look bigger; furniture that sits heavily on the floor makes a room look cluttered and small.

Polished marble, soft timber pieces, and artisan silver pieces are a few great ideas if you have a small living room.

Sofas

Your sofa is going to be the signature piece of furniture in your living room, so choose the design wisely. You don’t have to choose one with a plain design; go for one with a detailed design and neutral colours. If your sofa is a lighter colour, you can add character to it by choosing colourful throw pillows.
