Regarded as Asia's most straight-laced holiday destination, Singapore is a safe tourist hotspot for the masses. Renowned for its larger than life recreational highlights and world-class theme parks, Singapore is also a foodies' dream come true due to the melting pot of cultures that is its populace. From dining like a local to using public transport, here are some practical tips on how to enjoy your first getaway to the Lion City.

1. Stay a While

Those who are planning to holiday in Singapore for the first time should avoid scheduling too few days in this dynamic Asian metropolis. One of the biggest misconceptions about Singapore is that it's a weekend vacation hub and nothing more. Too many tourists whiz past this vibrant and culturally rich island nation in two or three-day holiday packages and believe they have experienced all that Singapore has to offer. First-time visitors should, therefore, plan to stay for more than a few days in the Lion City as there's too much to see and do in Singapore to pack it all into a weekend or long weekend getaway. Since Singapore welcomes visitors from around the world without a visa, there's no better way to take advantage of its month-long visa-free holiday offer than by actually spending some quality time in the country.

2. Use the MRT

Singapore's public transportation network is not only one of the most efficient but very affordable so visitors should rely on the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit trains to get everywhere during their trip. All one needs to do is buy a Singapore Tourist Pass or a similar travel pass which allows one to travel on the MRT, buses and other public transport options with ease. The value of the travel passes will differ as do the expiration dates but those who buy cards that can be topped up as they go will find it easier to navigate the country's super convenient public transport hubs. MRT stations are located in nearly every major attraction, shopping mall and hotel in Singapore so travelling by taxi or over-ground is hardly necessary when the subway is cheaper and faster.

3. Dine like a Local

Singapore is a foodie's dream destination not only because the country is home to its fair share of Michelin starred restaurants but because the best eats in town is actually affordable. Famed for its Hawker Centres and street food scene, travellers need not venture far or cough up a lot of cash to wine and dine like a king when in Singapore. Some of the most popular Hawker hubs are located near Marina Bay and in Chinatown where staples such as Laksa, chicken rice and Singapore chilli crab are always on the menu. Don't forget to drive by Little India for a taste of Singapore's best Biryani and Dosas in the Indian community stronghold of the Lion City.

4. Hit the Sights

No trip to Singapore would be complete without exploring the many iconic points of interest located in the country. This includes the truly impressive Gardens by the Bay with its Flower Dome and Supertrees. The Merlion and the Singapore Zoo are other highlights worthy of touring while the National Museum, The Singapore Flyer and the Botanical Gardens are equally popular attractions.

5. Go Bar Hopping at Happy Hour

Alcoholic beverages can be quite costly in Singapore so those who wish to have a great night out on the town should head to the country's top bars between 5 pm and 9 pm to capitalize on the discounts available during Happy Hour. Those based at the Grand Park City Hall will also enjoy the reduced rates for some bubbly even in a venue that's considered the best luxury hotel in Singapore while those who wish to go bar hopping will find no better place than Clarke Quay's drinking holes.
