Tangalle is an area in the south of Sri Lanka that is seeing recent growth. It is famous for its long stretches of sandy beaches that are lined with swaying coconut trees. It is also famous for its river estuaries where crocodiles reside plus the rocky headlands where you can view incredible sunsets. It is also a spot that is very popular among surfers! Let's take a look at what Tangalle has to offer you!

Hiriketiya Beach

Located just a 20-minute drive from Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort, Hiriketiya Beach offers some of the best waves on the island's southern shore. The village, which expands in size year after year, is located in a bay that is shaped like a beautiful conch shell and receives southeast waves that are diffracted throughout the day and night. The waves hit the shore on both sides of the beach. The simpler of the two is the one on the west, which has a gentle beach break with a rock-and-sand bottom that may be surfed in either direction. The wave on the east side of this bay is suitable for intermediate surfers and breaks over rock reefs covered in urchins. However, the ride is enjoyable, and the wave maintains its form all the way into the centre of the beach. If you would like to take surf lessons in Tangalle or go on tours from your hotel, you will most likely be brought here at some point. ‘Hiri’, as the locals call this beach, is just wonderful. This is one of the must-visit beaches that you shouldn’t forget to explore during your stay at a Sri Lanka luxury villa.

Kudawella

During the high season (which usually starts in November and ends in March), Kudawella often has several waves that are very, ridiculously simple to surf. When we speak about a whitewash, we are referring to dribbly tiny wisps of it that have a push. It is not a great spot for skilled surfers, who would be better off taking a towel, sunblock, plus snorkelling equipment with them instead. However, due to the presence of a well-regarded surf school right on the premises, it is an excellent choice for families who want to learn the techniques of surfing but also have young children in tow.

Unakuruwa

This place has been always rumoured to be the successor of Hiriketiya, but we do not believe it fully has the qualifications to measure up with Hiriketiya. At first glance, it would seem that the location is pretty comparable: A wide horseshoe harbour located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, since it is a little bit too exposed and open, it does not usually function that well. In addition, the location is far too near to the highway to have the same feel of a barefoot paradise as you experience in Hiri. However, there is a respectable right-hand turn, and the throngs are not as dense as they are farther west.

The Tangalle Beach

There are many who claim that you must go surfing at Tangalle, while others advise that you shouldn't bother. This entire region may be thought of as a single continuous shore break that thumps up against the beach, which is why we subscribe to the latter school of thought. The waves are better at the bays to the west, such as Unakuruwa or Hiriketiya. However, this beach is wonderful for birdwatching.

Where should a surfer stay while they are in Tangalle?

The hotels are perhaps one of the most appealing aspects of the Tangalle surf. Even though they are not directly next to the epic waves that can be found in Hikkaduwa or even Midigama, these locations nonetheless provide an excellent opportunity to get away from it all and unwind. The majority are located in such inaccessible areas that you will need to book excursions or tuk-tuks in order to reach them. However, it may be done quickly and simply; just inquire about it at the front desk.
