Thailand is a leading holiday destination in Asia, so it's safe to assume that every traveller will head out to Bangkok or Pattaya at some point in their globetrotting journey. Home to some of the region's most iconic temples and recreational hotspots, Thailand is also a relatively easy destination to navigate, even for solo visitors. From hopping on the metro in the capital to using long-distance buses to travel to beach hubs in Koh Samui, here's how to get around Thailand without hassle.

Domestic Flights

Tourists who wish to explore more than just the city of Bangkok during a trip to Thailand will find that domestic flights are the easiest way to get around the country. In fact, it is also among the most budget-friendly means of travelling around Thailand as some domestic flights will only cost around US$ 20. Regardless of the cost, the speed and efficiency cannot be overstated when heading to destinations such as Chiang Mai and Koh Samui. As the fastest way to reach districts all across Thailand, a flight of less than an hour can replace 10 hours spent on long-distance buses and trains. VietJet, Thai Lion Air, Air Asia, Bangkok Airways, Nok Air and Thai Airways are some of the carriers offering domestic connections to cities around Thailand. Tourists may have to pay extra for meals onboard and checked-in luggage, however, when travelling on these budget airlines.

Train Services

Tourists with more time to spare can also hop on the long-distance trains that crisscross Thailand daily. Divided into first, second and third-class cabins, train tickets can be purchased online. There are also a number of overnight trains heading out from Bangkok so tourists can travel while they slumber to areas such as Chiang Mai. Train schedules in Thailand, however, are not set in stone and trains are often delayed. That's why this mode of transport is more suitable for those who are not in a hurry to reach their rest at Travelodge Nimman or any other hotel that identifies itself as the best place to stay in Chiang Mai.

MRT and the SkyTrain

Tourists will find that getting around Bangkok is a breeze thanks to the BTS Skytrain network and the MRT Subway system. Both the over-ground train as well as the underground metro connects travellers with the top tourist attractions and neighbourhoods in the Thai capital. Those using the MRT or the SkyTrain service will be pleased with the budget-friendly travel passes available to pay for rides on both networks.

Buses

As the most cost-effective mode of transport accessible in Thailand, buses are less expensive than domestic flights and long-distance trains. Although the journey tends to take more time, backpackers and others with limited means will find it a great way to see the country. Overnight buses bound for Chiang Mai can take as long as 12 hours to reach the final destination. It's crucial to keep valuables in your day bag or handbag when taking the bus as checked-in luggage stored inside the bus is sometimes tampered with or lost.

Ferry Travel

Considered the best way to tour the Thai islands, hopping on a local ferry is an affordable way to reach beach capitals the likes of Koh Samui and Phuket. Tickets cannot be bought in advance so passengers will need to show up early at the ferry harbour to buy tickets. Luggage is often kept in the front area of the ferry and the seats on each ferry are also assigned.

Taxis

While taxi cabs are more accessible and less costly in Thailand, it is still more expensive than using the bus service or metro. Although taxis in big cities such as Bangkok are regulated and metered, the same cannot be said for more rural areas of the country.
