Getting around the city of Auckland is quite affordable and easy. There are many different options that you could use as the transport systems in the city are top-notch, arrive on time and are super comfortable. You could take public transport, hire a taxi, do a tour bus transfer or drive and even cycle. Auckland has an opportunity for all kinds of transport, so it all boils down to a matter of preference. Here's a look at all the kinds of ways you could get around Auckland.

Public Transport

The public transportation system in Auckland is very comfortable and easy to travel in. Especially if you are planning on sightseeing, the transport system, whether it is by ferry, bus or train would get you from one attraction to another and more often than not would go right by your hotel the likes of Avani Auckland Metropolis Residences. It is very easy to find out the times and routes for the transport services as they are all comprehensively listed on Auckland Transport AT Journey Planner. If you are planning to stay in the city for a while then consider purchasing an AT HOP card which will be payable across trains, buses and ferries.

City Link Buses

A cheap and rather convenient way to get around Auckland is the City Link Buses which will take you between the suburbs and the city centre. They are en route to popular dining spots and shopping districts and run regularly. While there is no timetable, you can catch one if you look for either the red, amber or green buses and stand under the matching stop.

Driving

Driving around Auckland is also great if you are comfortable behind the wheel. You can either hire a car, motorbike or even a motorhome if you are planning to explore constantly and not be confined to a single space. The motorway network is in great condition and if you want to explore areas that aren't tourist hot spots driving there is your best bet. Keep in mind that in New Zealand they drive on the left side. You can use the driver's permit from your country or an International Driver's License to drive up to 12 months per visit to the country.

Getting to and from Auckland Airport

If you are staying in one of the best hotels in Auckland, you can be guaranteed that the hotel will send a chauffeured car to pick you up at the airport if you make prior arrangements. And they will drop you on the day of your departure.

There is also a plethora of regular buses, shuttles, taxis and transfers available and quite easy to navigate so you don't have to worry if you opt to not being picked up by your hotel. Shuttle and taxi services are located outside the arrivals on the International Terminal once you have collected your luggage. There is a visitor's guide stall inside the airport which you can visit to get more information if you aren't sure about where you want to go or which taxi or shuttle services you should be taking.

Tours and Hop-On, Hop-Off Buses

If you want to see all the regular tourist hotspots you are better off joining a tour where you can depend on the expertise of local guides and gain inside information. The Hop-On, Hop-Off Tour services can be booked through the Auckland tourism website and are a great option especially if you are not sure what to see or are short on time during your visit. There are also specialised tours that you can opt for if the regular circles aren't what you are looking for.
