Situated at an elevation of over 1000m above sea level, Ella is a cosy town in the Uva province of Sri Lanka. It sits south of the island’s famed hill country destinations such as Nuwara Eliya and Kandy and boasts unique attractions. Whether you fancy a leisurely stroll through tea plantations, chasing waterfalls, thrilling activities or invigorating hikes, Ella has it all. Discover how you can explore the best of Ella in just 2 days.

Little Adam’s Peak

Start your first day in Ella early with an enjoyable sunrise hike to Little Adam’s Peak. Considered far less strenuous and demanding than its older cousin, Little Adam’s Peak is an ideal hike for both the experienced and inexperienced hiker. Be sure to browse through a few online Ella travel websites such as Ella Sri Lanka for detailed guidance or tips on hiking in Ella.

The summit can be reached via two ways: a long, picturesque trail winding through tea plantations or a set of steps. The trek takes approximately an hour. This is without factoring in the time you spend at the summit taking in the jaw-dropping views of your lush green surroundings, Ella Gap, Ravana Falls and Ella Rock. There are three tiny peaks at the summit, the furthest peak located about 30 minutes away from the rest.

The Flying Ravana Zipline

If you have some energy left and crave an adrenaline rush to work up an appetite for breakfast, then head to The Flying Ravana Zipline, Sri Lanka’s first zipline. This dual zipline, travelling at a speed of 80kmph, lasts for just a minute and extends over 500m. The reward? Aside from giving you the thrill of a lifetime, the zipline also affords magnificent aerial views of lush green tea plantations and Sri Lanka’s glorious mountains.

Nine Arch Bridge

Once you have had time to catch your breath, relax and fill your stomach with something delicious, consider making your way towards the famed Nine Arch Bridge. This spectacular 91m-long architectural wonder, standing at 24 feet, has been featured on many travel sites and magazines, and is thus a famous attraction. Generally, the bridge can be accessed via foot or tuk-tuk as it is located only a few minutes away from Ella. However, ensure you have a practical Ella travel guide on hand to find detailed information on how to access the bridge and make the most out of your experience. A must-do is a walk along the bridge or rail track to enjoy the serene tea plantation surroundings. Be mindful that trains still travel along this bridge, so be sure to move away from the bridge when you hear one.

Ella Rock

Later in the day, if time permits, and you are not too exhausted from your action-packed day, consider hiking Ella Rock to make it to the summit close to sunset. However, the trek is more challenging than Little Adam’s Peak and hence not recommended for everyone. The 8km trail starts at the Ella train station along the railway track and then branches off into a sharp ascent to the summit. The effort is well worth it when you are greeted with breathtaking vistas at the top.

Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory

On your second day, head out to Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory, located 14 minutes away from Ella, to learn about the tea manufacturing process in Sri Lanka. The factory offers tours daily at 30-minute intervals. You will be given a comprehensive explanation of the tea manufacturing process in Sri Lanka by a knowledgeable guide. You may also have the opportunity to join a tea tasting session. The factory also houses a tea shop and café. Hence, savour some freshly brewed Ceylon tea and scrumptious eats, and purchase a few souvenirs to take home with you.

Ravana Falls

After your tea plantation experience, head south towards Ravana Falls. You may need to travel via car or tuk-tuk to get to the waterfall. The Ravana Falls is located just a few minutes outside of Ella town and is identified by its majestic flow of water cascading down multi-levels of rock. The best time to gaze at the falls and get up close is during the dry season, as it is not slippery.

Diyaluma Falls

Next, travel about an hour southward to reach Diyaluma Falls, the country’s 2nd-highest waterfall. It is an ideal way to end your 2-day visit to Ella. Standing at the height of 720 feet, Diyaluma Falls features a natural pool at the top, perfect for a relaxing dip or soak. The hike to the natural pool at the top may last between 20-30 minutes.
