Bentota is a picturesque coastal town in Sri Lanka. It is in the Galle district of the Southern Province. Bentota offers a broad mixture of interesting activities - be it lounging near crystalline waters or partaking in snorkelling, windsurfing, diving, swimming or getting up close to turtle hatcheries. The beaches in Bentota make for perfect locations for a relaxing holiday.

Ventura Beach

This beach is the most famous and stunning of the beaches in this area and is one of the finest locations to try out water sports. Ventura Beach can be noticed over the Bentota Bridge and has many fancy hotels and resorts around it as well. The coastline is indeed spotless and usually free from crowds, making it an exclusive and romantic location for some downtime – alone or with a loved one.

Bentota Beach

Bentota Beach is perhaps the most favoured beach town on the south-western coast of Bentota. Miles of golden sands fringed by gently swaying palm trees is a beautiful sight. The waters are clear, unspoilt, and has a peaceful and family-friendly environment. Water sports are popular in Bentota Beach and is a top-notch seaside escape. During the high season at Bentota, one can expect some high waves and currents, which are perfect for water sports such as surfing, water skiing and boogie boarding. Satisfy your taste buds with a yummy Sri Lankan meal and seafood among the many seaside restaurants in the area. The beach and the surroundings have many resorts, ayurvedic spas, and retreats. When it comes to accommodation, you can find the likes of Cinnamon Bentota Beach and many other 5 star hotels in Bentota with ease.

Moragalla Beach

Placed between Bentota and Beruwala coast, Moragalla Beach has a memorable and serene shoreline. With clear blue waters and a sandy white beach, Moragalla is one-of-a-kind. It is a popular retreat for beach lovers who love to bask in its warmth and seclusion. The location is popular for fans of water sports as the shallow, warm waters, are ideal for snorkelling, diving, windsurfing, and much more. The beach has an island called the Moragalla dharmadhveepa a few metres away from the shore. It is surrounded by many trees, and there is a temple on the summit of this magical looking island. You can enjoy a boat ride to the temple, which is a location for yoga retreats. If not, one can hike to the temple; there are cement stairs that lead one directly to the island temple. The southern portion of the beach is attached to the Bentota River, also known as the Madu River. The river is surrounded by mangroves and is a popular tourist spot. The visitors can take a boat and a tour of the mangroves, which has a collection of interesting flora and fauna. If you’re lucky you may even spot a crocodile!

Other attractions – Cinnamon Island

While in Bentota, check out this beautiful island, which is roughly 65 kilometres from Colombo. The island has cinnamon plantations spread across many acres of land, most of which dates to the 1900s. It is the place to see the making of everyone's favourite spice, cinnamon. As a plus, you can also do some water sports while on the island. Experience the harvesting methods and the tedious processing, from peeling, greasing, and rolling of cinnamon into quills. A single family runs the whole operation, and a trip offers a change of atmosphere from the beach. You will get a newfound appreciation for the cultivation of cinnamon, and get the opportunity to purchase it in its purest form. Don't forget to check out the spectacular architecture and estates dotted around the place!
