While people love to journey to diverse destinations, write blogs about their experiences and post pictures of the amazing sights encountered, often forgotten is the importance of being a responsible traveller. This does not only encompass areas like being eco-friendly or reducing your carbon footprint but respecting cultures and helping local livelihoods as well. Here are some insights on how you can become more responsible in your travels and enjoy rewarding holidays too.

Choose Eco-Friendly Accommodation

When looking for a place to stay at, factors like rates, location and facilities are taken into consideration. However, you can find out just how eco-friendly or sustainable the property is as well. Some hotels or resorts have certifications from companies the likes of Earth Check and Green Globe which are signs that they are involved in sustainable tourism.

Other properties may also have various initiatives be it organic gardens from where food is sourced for onsite restaurants or recycling and energy conservation measures. Additionally, you can consider staying at smaller local guesthouses where you will be helping local families too.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

There are various ways in which to reduce your carbon footprint especially when it comes to travel. Flights are a necessity for getting to foreign destinations but you can think about getting direct connections when possible, which will negate the need of taking extra flights (thereby reducing your carbon footprint).

Once you reach your destination, consider making use of public transport like metros, buses, trains or boats than always taking private taxis; consider walking or cycling when possible. Also, remember to conserve electricity and water on your stay which is another way to reduce your carbon footprint.

Respect Traditions and Culture

It is very important that when you travel to foreign destinations, that you be mindful of local traditions, customs, culture and even etiquette. You need to do your research before heading to a particular country and its places of interest which can influence what you pack as well. For example, when visiting temples and other sacred religious sites, many countries in Asia will require you to dress conservatively and wear attire that covers bare legs and shoulders.

Knowing local greetings and even learning a few local phrases will be helpful and be appreciated by locals as well. Check out online resources such as Well Known Places which provide insights into various destinations around the world which will help you prepare for your trip.

Support Local Livelihoods

Another way you can be a responsible traveller is by supporting local livelihoods which would include purchasing products made locally be it clothing or souvenirs. While you can acquire some truly unique items, you will also be helping locals sustain their way of life.

Consider including visits to markets on your trip where you may find fresh produce, traditional handicrafts and more all sourced or made by locals. When it comes to food, these markets, as well as street-side eateries and vendors, also offer some truly amazing choices that give you a taste (literally!) of authentic cuisine.

Consider Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to give back to communities, interact with the locals and engage in fulfilling activities that benefit people and / or the environment. This can be done on a long-term or short-term basis and is not limited to highly-skilled professions. It could include everything from teaching English to children to getting involved in beach clean-ups.

Research organisations or charities that offer volunteer programmes in the destination you are heading to and find one that matches your interests and what you have to offer. This also means selecting organisations that are assisting local communities and are using the money which you generally have to pay to join such programmes, to help people and the planet.
