The vibrant Thai island of Phuket is a magnet for holidaymakers from across the globe offering many attractions for the visitor. If you happen to be thinking of a holiday to this charming island, you should remember that, just like in other tourist destinations around the world, you may encounter a few scammers. Keep in mind though, that most Thais are upright, honest and genuinely friendly and will look to help you when in need. That said, below are a few scams you may sometimes come across and need to avoid.

Take note of the jet ski scam

One of the most notorious and unpleasant scams in Phuket would be the well-publicized jet ski scam. In this deception, operators will hire out jet skis that are already damaged to unwary tourists. When the jet ski is returned, the operator will pretend to be astonished and angered by the damage and demand massive amounts of money in compensation. Even if you happen to inform the authorities in this regard, you will probably be unable to prove your case. One option would be at the very least to take some photographs before using the jet ski though a more ideal solution would be to enjoy such water sports organised by a trusted resort.

Be aware of the timeshare scam

Another widespread scam to be aware of would be the timeshare scams which happen to be rather commonplace in localities like Patong, Karon and Kata. You might be approached for this kind of scam by innocuous-looking European or Thai ladies who would request you to complete a rapid survey to claim a reward or prize. Unfortunately, if you fall for the scam, you would be obliged to endure a lengthy presentation regarding a holiday club or timeshare; your reward, possibly in the form of a useless contract or unusable vouchers will be worthless. Therefore, always reject these kinds of invitations.

Watch out for the minivan scam

Following their disembarkation at Phuket Airport, tourists would naturally desire to travel to their accommodation in the cheapest manner. Therefore, many visitors will opt for a minivan as these vehicles would typically be much cheaper than taxis. However, en route to your hotel, some minivan drivers would halt at a so-called ‘travel agent’ who will inform you that your accommodation is completely booked or no longer in operation. They will then recommend a vastly overpriced substitute. To avoid this scam, you could book your hotel in advance. One of the trustworthy Phuket business hotels for visitors to consider which would also arrange reliable transport and excursions would be Avani+ Mai Khao Phuket Suites & Villas.

Avoid the sick buffalo scam

Since many of Phuket’s bar girls are obliged to make as much money as possible so that they can support their families, they will sometimes engage in scams to relieve naïve males of their money. Bar girls may tell you that they are facing an emergency – such as a sick family buffalo – to divest you of your cash. Sometimes, even after returning to their home country, unsuspecting men will send regular money payments to their Thai paramours, without realizing that they could be receiving similar payments from other males.

Evade the gems scam

Another well-known scam to be aware of in Phuket would be the gems scam. In this scam, taxi drivers will transport you to jewellery stores free of charge, where you will be told that you have the chance to purchase Thai gems that you could sell for lucrative sums in your native country. Needless to say, if you fall for this scam, the taxi driver would receive a generous commission whilst you will be left with some worthless baubles. To avoid such situations, be vigilant and avoid offers that seem to be unrealistic.
